Must have's?

Ok, so I'm currently in the market for a 7 seat X5, was looking at 35d's, but a couple of £k would see me in a 40d which I would prefer. Looking around 2010/11, and was wondering if there are "must have" options?

I would like;

Elec tailgate
Cruise (with braking/start off?)
Decent Hi-Fi
Main beam assist (is this the one that moves the beams around things?)
Bluetooth for phone and music

Is there an "option pack" that I should look for?

Thanks in advance..

Mike

I think main beam assist automatically dips your headlights when cars approach or when near street lights. Adaptive headlights are the ones that follow corners.

Everything is down to personal choice but I've had the pano roof in both my E70 and F15 and wouldn't be without it now.  E70 didn't have reverse camera as standard so Id be sure to make sure you get that.

Yes, I have the surround camera pack and that is great. The other pack that is a must is the "media" pack that gives you the satnav, BT etc.

I'd focus on the lights and get the best package possible ideally HBA with adaptive lights

The rest is owner taste as mentioned, reverse camera is nice but surround view nicer
Pano roof is on one of my must haves,  but problem prone

I'd never say the media pack though stumbled on current car that has the individual media pack, the sound is sublime and comes as a good find, what a difference

Comfort access with soft close eliminates the need for key fumbling!

Ultimately the more toys the more can go wrong

If you can find them a car with Comfort Seats is worth it too.

Comfort seats are a lot better than standard seats on support

Many adjustments and what I like is that the sides deflate as you open the door which means less pressure on bolster wear.

Wasn't looking for it when buying, but really enjoy heads up display.
Bi xenons with the movement is great around country lanes at night.

Obviously its personal choice .................but

SE model not M sport............with running boards
Comfort seats with heating front and rear.
4 zone climate
NO sunroof. More trouble than its worth.
Heated steering wheel............brilliant in winter.
Adaptive headlights.
Top view surround & rear camera.
Media package .
Extended light package .
Service pack 5 year/ 60,000 mile.

Your budget would allow for an LCI 40d, 35d engine wasn't LCI and was made from 2007-2010.
Do spec checks on each car for sale by obtaining the VIN either by using BMW warranty check or by asking the owner, then putting the VIN into a BMW vin check website.

Electric tailgate was common, few LCI ones didn't have this. Is a bit slow as the boot is quite heavy.
Cruise control with braking function was standard. There was the option of adaptive cruise control with stop&go was a rare option and hard to find.
The standard Hi-Fi is horrible, its sacrilege how they fit that to something this expensive. Look for at the very least the S676 HiFi speaker system option on the spec. This is called the BMW Business Loudspeaker system, is 205W and sounds great. The better, but harder to find sound system is the BMW individual audio system which is 800W.
Main beam assist was common, but must check on the spec. It alternated between high and low beam to make sure oncoming traffic isn't blinded. Easy to retrofit. The one where the headlights turn is called adaptive headlights and is a bit harder to find.
Regarding media, you should be looking for the BMW Professional Media package with the large Sat-Nav and bluetooth preparation.

Options I recommend are the HiFi, professional media, front and rear heated seats, 19" wheels on M-sport models as 20" is quite solid and bumpy, DAB, Third row seating (increases resale value), privacy glass and, if you can find it, adaptive drive as this transforms the ride.

Re your questions

Three stereo packages
Basic, logic & individual picture is mine, is the easiest way to differiate
By looking on the rear door,
A single speaker - basic
Two speakers - logic
Two Speakers with silver grilles - Individual
Image

The sat nav, you rightfully note as good, professional premium mapping, expect these to need updating, easily done and maps available for download for minimal cost though you'll need a FSC code also

There's no mention of high beam assist, or adaptive lights though one of those if you've never had you'll not miss

The light package gives exterior door handle illumination and additional ambient lighting on top of the door bins & additional footwell lighting, allbeit not the best. I have this and looking to code the brightness - work in process!

S6NF - don't have this but also don't have Bluetooth streaming so can't comment

Enjoy, car shopping is always good
