Brand New tyres delivered today that are nearly 9 years old???

Hi All,

I needed a couple of front tyres so found a dealer online (ebay) who said Brand New old stock so I bought them.

They arrived today but the manufactured date is 13/08 (week 13 2008).

I have immediately got on to the seller who assures me they are from a Pirelli distributor and have been stored properly.

My concern is are they safe? legal? will they wear quickly?

I had a quick look online and ROSPA say:

"Tyres that have been in storage should not be placed into use if they are over 6 years old, from their date of manufacture.
When a tyre has been in use, the effects of ageing are lessened to a degree, but such tyres should be replaced after 10 years.”

They have a quite a saving of 40% but if I need to replace in a few months it won't be.

Cheers

Advice for caravans is tyres should be less than 5 years old.
But then they don't get used often and sit in one place for a while...

On my E53 found the set of rears I had fitted after the obligatory inner edge failure turned out to be manufactured 4 years before I purchased the car!!
Meaning at time of purchase they were 6years old

They failed by inner edge de-laminating at 60mph..
Luckily only making a racket but not damaging anything or anyone!!

Purchased from a well known online tyre company of a colourless shape variety..
Lesson learnt that the tyre place 2 doors down from me actually beats their prices anyway!!!

I have been in the same position. I was told that they have a 5 year shelf life so legally they were not in the wrong. As a goodwill gesture they were replaced to keen the end customer happy.

I bet 99% on people wouldn't even know what the DOT code was  :(
