Thermostat or Not?

Post by MattX » Mon Jan 23, 2017 7:17 pm

First winter with my 2012 30d

It seems to take a fair while for the engine temp to rise to halfway since it got cold. It gets there and the air from the blowers is nice and hot even before.
Is this common or is the thermostat on the way out?

Hi

It will depend on several factors the air temperature, the driving/ or sitting stationary in traffic and how high you have the heater.

I would say if the heater is warm and heating the car then it is working fine, but you are taking the warm water from the system and running it through the heater to warm the car, so the car warms up slower.

A quick check would be to switch the heater off completely and do the same drive as the previous day and you should see the engine warms up a lot quicker and if it does I would say it is definitely working.

It would just be down to the cold weather, remember that when driving the engine will be getting cold air sucked into the radiator and the engine area which all has a cooling effect.

If the car still doesn't get up to temperature, and the handbook should state the normal operating temperature range, then you could have a problem and a sticking the thermostat is the most likely cause and can be taken out and then needs to be tested.

Hope that helps
Graeme

My engine gets to halfway on the dial within 5 miles from a cold cold start. I think you have a sticking thermostat
