Burning Rubber!

Just had the oil service done and the garage has warned me that my rear tyres are close to the legal limit  :(

Had the car two and a half years, when I got it I put a new set of Kuhmo's on which lasted circa 8k miles, the set of Bridgestones have lasted roughly 15k.....

I wish I didn't have a heavy right foot!  :-[

After reading your post i had to go check when i got my 4 Toyo Proxes S/T  , Turns out it was october 2014  the mileage now on them 18k approx  still a lot of life on them , they are wearing very even all over  especially on the inner rears ! , im not heavy on the right foot ..... i would say ...brisk ish

275/20 front  315/20 rear    35 psi all round

I will check my sizes too, run approx 33psi, wear is even which is good.

I was told the extra psi keeps the centre of the tyre up /out /inflated and helps stop the edges wearing out first

also get your suspension geometry checked regular

I run 315's at 36psi and when I fitted them I said to myself I'd be well pleased with 20k but now that I've got there I've moved the goalposts and want 25k.

Did they tell you why tgey were close to the linit ie are they simply worn down or are there issues with tracking, or under or over inflation?
For all those quoting random psi's that they are running the manufacturers spec is on the drivers door pillar. 32psi - this may need a slight variation if doinv lots of mmotorway driving or the vehicle is heavily laden. Other than that it should always be 32psi or 2.2bar

As the OP himself says, it's about driving style. But it's not only to do with acceleration, but also braking, town ir motorway driving, tyre pressures, vehicle load, temperature,  tracking, etc etc etc not to mention the tyre compound too

I had the tracking checked before, all OK and with the even wear on the tyres that backs this up.

I was just wondering what sort of life you guys n girls were getting. Most of my miles is dual carriageway and motorway.

Yes I am very heavy footed but then that's why I bought the X

Unfortunately, I have a heavy right foot too... & was shredding the outer edges of my tyres - front AND back...

I did realize that I do a lot of trips whereby I enter/exit a lot of motorway slip roads that are rounded for ages and high speed too.... so I reduced the slip road speed significantly reducing the side ways load on my tyres..
et voila... I have virtually zero edge wear now...

Cornering is the key, keep the speed/load/power down on corners & the tyres will respond accordingly..
did for me any way.

I've just bought my x5 and was thinking first job 4 new tyres and a wheel alignment.

I've found some accelera tyres at £300 for all 4, car isn't going to be driven overly hard, mainly by the wife, has anyone else tried these? I'm usually a sucker for michelins...

I'm going to give you a personal view answer here, I've found there is a snob attitude towards tyres, ie big brand name or you are showing you can't afford an x really. I run  Accelera front and Continental rear only because Accelera don't do 315's. I'll change them all when the Continentals run out but there will be at least another 5k in the Accelera. No issues with noise or grip or life and I will certainly use them again.
