X5 coming home tomorrow after gearbox re-con..

It'll be strange jumping on a bus then taking the train down the country to collect my beloved tomorrow morning. It's only been away for a week getting the gearbox removed and re-built by the lads at Liverpool.
I'm looking forward to hearing what was all done but during a phone-call today they said it was just as they thought when they opened it up. It seems to me to be a good idea to explain your symptoms in detail to them and if you find they understand what your telling them you both get a good idea of the pricing of the job. What I had explained to them was the same as I explained to several other specialists but just got this feedback from the company that they knew exactly what my problem was and certainly upped my confidence that parting with that kind of cash was going to be well worth it with the end result.
Cant wait to get it onto that M6 and confidently cruise up the fast lane back home....
Will keep you posted of the end result and what was all involved with the re-build....
Jonny

It was the lads at "Birch motors" in Liverpool,..they specialise in BMW GM 5 speed, ZF 6 speed amongst others,... were well recommended by folk on this forum and other places,... I'll certainly be giving my reviews once I've put it through its paces !!
Hope the forecast snow doesn't show until I'm back up home !!!!

Let us know how you get on buddy, always good to hear of experiences from trusted places.
Let us know how much and what they did/change etc.
As I said before, they have good reviews on other forums. What was their premises like? I've read that it's a bit of a bombsite lol

lol,....crikey you guys are more concerned than me wife !!!
You know what happens when us older codgers have a long day travelling,....the couch reeled me in and I fell asleep !!
So,..... Yes,..I got there okay,..stressfull journey down with my son on the train,...lost my booking referance at Carlisle and had to buy myself another ticket £38 !! although my sons referance number couldnt be used to cross-referance to me because I used Paypal...
Eventually got there,...OK, the place is not a shiny new, polished floor garage with tools arranged up on the wall,..far from it,... a bit more like organised chaos !!! lol.
BUT,... their customers were obviously not put off by the premises as the value and class of the vehicles inside were there to be seen !!
The owner was indeed a very knowlege -able guy,... he took his time to explain what he had done, most of which I could follow after reading up on forums and google search. New Torque converter,..new seals , scoring to two valve bodies were addressed and clutches E and B were replaced. The oil had never been changed and was black from the burnt clutches and the valves were full of gunk/sludge.
It was ready to go at the time he said (1 pm ) and I can only say I'm absolutely delighted at the job he's done. I knew straight away on the motorways that the high speed/gear slipping was gone, and it smoothly changed up through every gear on the way out of the city.
Once I reached the end of the motorway it was back onto the country roads for the last 45 miles.
I popped it over into sport-mode a few times and my god did it hold on to those gears and lift its head !! tried the manual shift a few times too with no problems at all,..and when coming to traffic lights it down-geared the way it should with no sharp changes.
All in all I can say I'm very satisfied with the service,..1 week turn-around and the price ???... £1650
( wont tell you how much I bartered off this... being a Scotsman !! )
