Evening all,
Wasn't ever expecting to be posting here asking about my wives car But today it lost power (wouldn't rev above 2000rpm and whirling\whining noise from the engine bay. I met her, suspected a turbo failure, AA collected car and recovered to my BMW indy garage. He confirmed it's the turbo. Car is a 2008 with 74k miles.
My mechanic recommended the more expensive turbo at Eurocarparts (two available), he's replaced dozens and never had any problems, they come with a two year warranty. I believe it's made by the, same manufacturer as BMW use. It's brand new, not a reconditioned unit. However, it's a few quid over £1k plus fitting!
Has anyone had any success with the recon units on ebay or elsewhere? Seem to be around around £300?? Plus a £150 refundable deposit.
Car is a keeper for the next 18 months and 20k miles, so would rather fix for long term reliability, but if possible to save £700 then that's obviously worth considering.
Look forward to your thoughts.
Graeme

2.0d X3 Turbo Replacement Advice
Re: 2.0d X3 Turbo Replacement Advice
If it is a Garrett then you are looking at OEM quality and probably a lot cheaper than OEM.
If you are getting a recon then check the supplier carefully and the warranty offered. Many folks have no issues with recon as long as they are from a respectable trusted source.
I know what you mean on price as I can get a recon for £350 or a new Garrett for £1950 - and that is for just one of the two! BMW will add at least £500 plus fitting on that.

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Thanks for that. Yeah I had a look a the cost of a turbo for my X5 and it was £2k for a new one! At least I have a warranty.
The ECP is made by Mitsubishi but the looks of it.
So I guess the big question is... who are the trusted suppliers for turbo recons??
I should have mentioned, it's the 177ps engine.

Out of interest is it fitted with a DPF? Backpressure from a DPF will knock a new turbo out in a short time

Not sure to be honest... never noticed it re-gen... Minimum trip is 8 miles to the nearest town, so always gets a good run everyday.
Good point though and worth checking.
