Clunking noise and run out of fuel

Hi guys.
Since bought the car a few weeks ago I've had a clunking noise coming from the back end when going over bump or start stop start stop like jerking the car.
My first thoughts sub frame bushes.
Had the mechanic come and he first checked the front, on front drop link bar and lower stabiliser bush, then on the rear all he could find was the swivel bush that goes in the hub unit had play in as the rear wheel would move around an inch of play, checked play in sub frame bushes and all ok.
Order parts and he fitted them the next day even though the rear hub bush was a b*****d
Got in car and exactly the same noise is there. Any ideas please?
Also ran out of fuel just between quarter and half tank.
The left side had a new sender unit in November with receipt genuine part, and the main pump and secondary unit was replaced in June second hand, well we checked the left side manually by moving it up and down and it worked empty to full,, couldn't get the drivers side unit to go passed half so I'm guessing the drivers side unit is no good?

The clunking seems to echo through the car

Is the exhaust  lose / banging on part of the car/suspension ?
To be fair though, worn UJ's does seem more likely.

Just thinking aloud.

It is probably not this but worth checking ........ I had a clunk going round corners and over bumps. i found a couple of tools following round the well of the boot where the spare wheel is. Drove me mad for weeks. Worth a check if only to eliminate, but completely remove the spare don't just glance in. I had done that two weeks previously and thought there was nothing there. Take the wheel right out. It will take you ten mins max to eliminate this
