Service interval

Post by Neal » Tue Jan 03, 2017 12:38 pm

So, took the X3 to BMW this morning for a service. Booked in for an oil change and micron filter according to their schedule. Got there to be told that the service is actually just a brake fluid change. Long story short I copped the strip a bit as it has become apparent I was told a slight lie when I bought the car. I'm going service the car myself. Anyone know the official intervals? And what grade of oil do you all use? Been told two different grades by the same dealership.

Two types of service normally (based on all our BMWs past and present):

1.  Time based - every two years and covers brake fluid.  It used to bring up an orange clock symbol but may just say 'Service' now without telling you which one.

2.  Condition based - up to 23,000 mile intervals depending upon how you drive.  It used to run on the amount of time taken to burn through a number of litres of fuel - a few thousand but I can't remember exactly how many.  Every other CB service is larger so you may get oil & filter on one and a larger oil/filter and a few other bits next time around.  It used to be called Inspection 1 and Inspection 2 but that changed a few years back.

Oil could be 0w30 or 5w30 typically.  What have you been told?

Different dealers do use different options however the 'standard' make with BMW Dealers is frequently Castrol Edge Professional FST.  As kind as it is fully-synthetic and meets BMW LL04 and ACEA C3 it is fine.
