Also check the Crank-Pulley.... it is a 2 part assembly, with a rubber center.
I had the rubber center fail & slip against the outer part... it was a bit smelly & burny for a week before the pulley finally fell to bits..

Sherpantine belt, I've just replaced mine with a new tensioner and alternator pulley/ clutch.
The tensioner she wear and cause the belt to run on the edge of the pulley rubbing on the crank pulley.

Thanks - what was the cost and did you fit it yourself? Difficult?

I assume when you ask how to change the belt and tensioner that you have confirmed that is where the fault is?

Find that interesting, didn't know until I read on here about the freewheel device in alternator pulley. Does this apply to all X5's? I know BMW recommend changing various things, some of which can be taken with a pinch of salt but stuff like that can bite you on long journeys. Are the people who spend the money on preventive maintenance the people who claim their vehicle is ultra reliable where as the rest of us are in the "what the bloody hell has gone wrong now" bracket

Maybe the "ultra reliable" statement is a step to far. but you know what I mean.
