Is anyone running an Xdrive 25d on here?

I have the engine/gearbox in my 1 series but am looking for real world findings on fuel economy and driveability. In the 1 series it's more than adequate but worried the extra 500KGs will have a big impact. We had an E53 facelift d which was similar HP but the 25d is 40-50lbft down on torque compared to the old 3.0d though admittedly the new X5 is a fair bit lighter and I'm sure the extra gear ratios will help also.

Can't help with that engine in the X5, but I used to have the engine in my F11 525d and many years ago in my 123d. Great engine in the 1 series, pretty nippy, although a short 6th gear meant mpg suffered. In the 5 series it was great up to around 60-70mph, but then performance a took a real dive, especially if the car was loaded up. I averaged 41mpg over 3.5 years. Good balance between performance and economy.

Add another 300+kg, X-drive plus poorer aerodynamics and I think you'd be lucky to get 36/37mpg..

So great engine, but I wouldn't imagine it works very well in the X5, you really need the 3.0d. If only from a refinement point of view, X5 shouldn't have a 4 cyl engine.

I’m running an X-Drive 25D.

I’ve come from a Discovery 4 with a TDV6 3.0L & was somewhat sceptical as to how the 25D engine would be in comparison.

From a driveability point of view, I have no complaints whatsoever. There’s loads of pick up ‘n’ go in the X5, in fact I’d have to say there’s more “ommmphh” in it than the was in the Disco. General motorway driving, overtaking on backroads & nipping around town, I have never found it to be lacking, in fact I’d rate it as more than adequate.

So far, I’ve only towed my small trailer, (single axle / 750KG)  with the X5 & again have found no issue at all. I have not as yet towed my larger trailer (twin axle / 3500KG), so I can’t comment on that just yet.  While I never tow really heavy loads I will be curious as to how the smaller engine will cope when coupled up with the larger trailer.

MPG wise, I seem to be averaging around 32MPG at the moment, which is almost identical to my Disco. There’s only just shy of 10K kilometres on the clock at the moment, so I’m not sure if further loosening up of the engine will improve things. I know that on “Mrs Kered’s” X3 it took more than 10K to see much improved MPG figures. So only time will tell if the same will hold true for the X5.

But I have to say I am more than happy with the 25D engine from a driveability point of view & have not yet found it lacking in any way whatsoever.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the input guys. I have the engine and ZF8 spd already in my F20 and it goes well with the DTUK tuning box on it. Will try and get a drive in the X5, no need to tow anything.
