3.0d cracked manifold

Post by the shreksta » Tue Dec 20, 2016 11:55 am

Hey guys

I've been getting a bit of exhaust fume on cold start into the cab so today I started the car with the bonnet up.......was like a smokey cavern lol

It's the same dry horrible smell I get from the back of the car when I cold  start it.

3 questions.....

1- how much are bmw gonna spank me for a new manifold?

2- is there a decent aftermarket one that's considerably cheaper?

3-how long will it take a garage to change roughly?

Do a quick search on here...
Its been done already.

It looks like going for a cast manifold, rather than the OEM steel one, is probably a better investment.
Seem to remember around £300 to buy..

Not sure how much BMW would charge to fit.. wouldn't expect much change from a grand????
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

I would get my local indy to fit it buddy. Any idea where I can buy a cast one?

Well you could try typing 'BMW X5 exhaust manifold' into a search engine coz you'll get this lot..... :xmastongue:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/bmw-x5-exhaust-manifold

You have an M57 engine, likely an M57TU D30 or very similar.  Loads to choose from and used in all cars fitted with that lump.

aahhh sarcasm..........the lowest form of wit  :)) :)) :))

i simply havent had the time to research it yet thats all.

just regarding the cheap ones listed on ebay................im coming froma subaru background and the cheaper stuff from ebay was always a big NO NO, ive had cheap aftermarket exhausts from ebay that were a pain in the ass to fit. buy cheap-buy twice was a saying i got familiar with.

has anybody had experience of these cheap manifolds? any particular seller i should use? are the cheaper gaskets that come with it any good?

also is there any other jobs worth doing while the manifold is being changed?

sorry for all the questions guys but im in a bit of a pickle as im working a shit load of hours to finish up before xmas.

thanks for all the help and by the way..............£380+ vat for a genuine bmw manifold........piss off springs to mind lol

I have similar exhaust smoke under the bonnet... turns out to be the turbo charger to Downpipe gasket...

unfortunately, the whole top end of the engine ancilleries need to come off...
at the same time I will change the AC pump, as it is inaccessible from below for the feed pipes...

i bought a new Cast Manifold + studs, gaskets, seals & turbo gasket from ebay for under £100...
so this little job is waiting for a dry sunny "weekend" ...
it will take a few hrs of removing parts before I can even SEE the manifold, let alone remove it ...

happy days eh !!!

I had a slight smell of exhaust (very faint, only I noticed it rather than passengers) and I thought it could be an exhaust leak or manifold crack, but as you can't even see the manifold I thought Id try the cheapest thing first, and that's change the cabin filter. Its made all the difference.
For your issue though, if you can actually see the smoke in the engine bay that's much more significant than the issue I had
