Transfer Box replaced

Post by CondorX5 » Sat Dec 17, 2016 11:35 am

Well that was fairly easy by dealer standards - new transfer box in my 40d within 24 hours of dropping it off with them.  I suppose we had done all the box ticking earlier and teeth sucking routines from the dealer when the car was in for a service -they routinely blame the tyres / wheels and the algorithm apparently insists they change the wheels and tyres to a different set before looking any further, which they did.  The tech also claimed he couldn't replicate the problem at all and had "never heard of it, ever" so must have felt a right prat when I insisted he join me in the car and I did it withn seconds, over and over, until even he said, "oh I know what you mean now" . They booked it in again for this Wednesday and it was completed by Thursday, collected yesterday morning. Silky smooth slow turns at full lock, just as it should be.

Luckily its an AUC so no quibble - total cost would apparently have been around £4500 according to dealer, with the labour costs being a substantial part of that due to their ridiculous rates, £200 an hour!

Have BMW uprated the new transfer boxes, or just fitting the same box, which could end up needing to be changed again. ????

Still the ATC450 according to Realoem - through until 04/12.  There is an ATC45L showing as brought in during late 2011 and still in use.  It isn't listed against the E cars, only the F models of the X3,X4,X5,X6.

Don't know what they replaced it with, will ask - assume the ATC450 although it might be the later one.  Hopefully it won't need a second one!

Atc450. Atc45l will not fit E70. Atc450 and Atc45L are same boxes inside, same design. Atc45,35 etc will share same issues as 450...judder at low speed (80%) or judder at any speed (20%).

I'm getting a bit of a 'lurch' when slowing down and stopping, is this the same problem?
Not too worried as I've got the Mondial warranty so around £200 excess.

The transfer box problems all seem to have a similar presentation from what I have read - the shudder/slip-slip-slip when turning or reversing very slowly at full steering lock or very sharply, like when reversing into a tight parking space. No issues at all going forwards, slowing down etc - silky smooth - lurching sounds more like a gearbox problem potentially, not a transfer box issue.  The gearbox on the E70 seems to be pretty sound though, esp the LCI 8speed version.
