BMW auc or private buy with warranty.............

situation is this.....

im fed up of renting so really need to get on the property ladder so i think my e53 x5 may have to go to help towards a deposit.

once im in my new house i plan on returning to x5 ownership in the form of an e70.

option 1-

looking at the AUC cars offered by bmw they all seem low miles and you obviously get the warranty BUT the price is alot higher than buying private.

option 2-

buying private will keep the price down and i can get a warranty from bmw offered here

my question is......the warranty on the auc car is it the same as the warranty in the link? or is the auc car more likely to have stuff covered should it fail.

not that it matters but im looking at either the 4.8 v8 or any of the diesels.

BMW are quite strict on what constitutes an 'approved used' in terms of mileage, history etc.

They also carry out any minor repairs before selling - stone chips, small knocks, rattles etc.

History is guaranteed and the warranty is very similar to a new car - i.e. if you get a rattle that will fix it.

You won't get any of this with a private car of course and the warranty is just like any other insurance backed system - you don't need to buy the BMW one.

That said, BMW dealers make huge margins on used cars! I've traded in all of my old BMWs when buying the new one - the last one they have £9k for.... it appeared on their forecourt for £14k.

thanks for the reply buddy. to be honest price isnt so much an issue as it will be either a loan from the bank or finance from bmw.

Just regarding the auc warranty, is it for the time you own the vehicle or is it just a 12 month warranty?

I simply wouldn't buy an X or any other BMW for that matter, unless it was an AUC.  The AUC warranty comes included in the purchase price from BMW for a year, you can then opt to continue with it or not - my E53 is still covered by it and its now 11 years old!  The AUC warranty for the first year is absolutely all inclusive - even includes the battery.  After the first year battery not included and water ingress is for some reason not covered either.  My E53 has had thousands and thousands of pounds of repairs and replacements covered by warranty so far; my E70 is going in next week for the transfer box to be replaced, it has developed the stutter on sharp turns /steering lock. No quibble no hassle.  Its a very complex car which cost £££££ when new, so scrimping and buying from Honest Joe's Corner Carshop would make me very nervous about the expensive issues awaiting when the miles pile on.

Also I'm guessing that as part of the auc warranty, you must have your car serviced at the main dealers.........something that makes me cringe as I simply do not trust main dealers.

My E53 is just over £100 a month at the moment.......130k miles and climbing and its the 4.8is so pricey to maintain.  I believe the E70 40d like I have a present, a 2012, is more expensive monthly due to the twin turbo.

Yes, the service record must be maintained and brake fluid etc done as per schedule, but BMW have reasonable pricing on services for cars over 4 years old. To be honest, with the variable sefvicing schedules it only ends up being every two years anyway.  I am not 100% sure if it has to be main dealer serviced though, I think if its a VAT registered indy using OEM BMW parts then legally there should be no issue. I never had my E53 brake pads or discs done at the dealers, nor any other bits and pieces that were not covered by warranty as some prices were scarily ridiculous - just be sensible and if they quote a crazy price for a non-warranty item just laugh and refuse to have them do it. I remember them wanting about £600 to replace an entire window winder actuator and motor (window was clunking when going up and down, and they "diagnosed" it as terminal ).  Non-BMW indy we have used for years for other cars took the door card off and replaced the bolt which had come loose. Total £50.

The E70 is a lot more complex than the E53 though, so I am probably likely to stay with the main dealers mostly.  We don't have a decent BMW specialist locally, our trustworthy indy is a general mechanic.

I pay just under £100 a month on my X6, but if anything serious goes then it will likely be far more than the annual premium!  My Dealer charges more than £200/hr for labour now.  I didn't cost that much as Senior IT Project Manager on global contracts, and that's with 30+ years experience!  The motor trade is taking the mickey now.

its the level of skill at main dealers that worries me,i use a great indy for all my car work on all 3 cars and have never ever had an issue. main dealers just worry me,i know im tarnishing them all with the same brush its just how i feel.

i do around 5k a year so the miles wont be clocking up too quickly

Apart from 2 yearly brake fluid changes, the servicing is cndition based, so with lower mileage probably only every 2 years as well, plus or minus.  Check the small print though, I don't think you are obliged to stick to main dealer servicing, but any potential goodwill contributions will disappear if you don't. I agree the skill levels are very variable, I had to demonstrate the stutter on turning as the eejits cpuldn't replicate it.  Very embarassed Master Tech in the car with me as I did it over and over within seconds of driving off with him in the passenger seat - oh, it never did that with us!

E53s are not worth such a lot anymore, is it really worth getting rid?  Especially if you do a fairly low mileage. Rather save up the cost of an E53 as part of your deposit?    Then trade up once your house purchase is all done, as mortgages have become a nightmare when getting credit for car finance etc.

E53s are not worth such a lot anymore, is it really worth getting rid?  Especially if you do a fairly low mileage. Rather save up the cost of an E53 as part of your deposit?    Then trade up once your house purchase is all done, as mortgages have become a nightmare when getting credit for car finance etc.

depends what its worth really, its a 54 facelift 3.0d sport with nearly full history and on 112k in really really good condition so im guessing around £5k-£6k

How much better off are you going to be by buying your own house? Sounds like a lot if you are going to get after an E70 once you have bought your property...

Personally, I would do what I can to keep the E53 - you know the car etc. and when the money rolls in after buying your new home, pay off the loan or CC you used as deposit instead of selling the E53.

Also, what are you going to do for transport if you do sell your car? Surely there will be a period where you will be without while you pay for your house and then save up for an E70.
