Hi guys need a  bit of advice on my wife's x3 2.0d,the car will not start on the first turn of the key but starts and ticks over a bit lumpy on the second attempt so i put my scanner on it and it came up with 3 glow plugs down even though the glowplug light goe's straight out and a maf sensor fault,so today i have been out and changed all the glowplugs but when i took them out they were covered in oil and there was oil in the inlet manifold egr and intercooler pipe  :([any idea's]anyway put it all back together and its still not right so next step is the glowplug controller if i can find where the feckin thing is.

                      cheers rob

The glow plug module is fastened to the engine block I believe, hidden under the manifold, there is a recent post on this , so hopefully someone will know.
Oil in the manifold  can be via the EGR valve, but usually General its carbon/ Oily mess.
The X3's are prone to turbo problems, so this could be the turbo seals.
Try disconnecting the plug from the MAF, to see if the engine runs better, as it will revert to a default settings on the engine management.
Good luck with getting it sorted

Hi , recently changed my glow plug controller. It's a p.i.t.a but the controller on my 07 3.0sd is in mounted on the side of the engine block (near side). If in dought follow the glowplug leads to the controller. It's about the size of a cigarette box with two plugs on the bottom. One is the power and the other is the output leads to the glow plugs.
All the best.

The controller is real pain it's under the alternator, when I did mine I found it easier to remove the under tray and the lower wheel arch panel, then with a long extension you can get to it quite easily.

The hard part is getting the plugs off, however I still had issues after new glow plugs and controller.
