Gearbox Oil

Post by dobbor1 » Sat Nov 05, 2016 8:20 am

My car is currently in a BMW garage due to a gearbox oil bracket and pipe failure. They are charging me £400 just for the new oil.  Does this sound right??

The total bill is £900.

The oil is expensive but BMW will be adding a large mark-up on top of that (as they always do).  I would not be surprised if the 'normal' retail price was around  £200 though.

I don't know how much these 8-sp boxes hold as so few folks have needed it done yet (I'm only at 35,000 miles).

Im still puzzled how a bracket had failed at 65k miles. The technicians have never come across this on the E70.

So should I just suck it up or challenge the oil cost?

Hi ask them what oil they are using , use the net to check the price of it then haggle , I usually say that I will be going somewhere else in future that normally knocks the bill down quite a bit .
Don't be afraid to ask for discount they have a decent mark up on most of the parts , it won't look good in Germany if they receive a complaint and did nothing to resolve it !
  Good luck

I was researching a possible gearbox oil service last week. This item & price is fairly representative of what it costs for filter and oil kits.

£900,  :o  even by BMW MD standards that's one heck of a mark-up.

That's a 6-speed kit. He's got a different box.  2011 onwards are 8-sp so may be a bit more, but only £50 perhaps.

Around here my Dealer charges £200/hour for labour - and other main dealers for different manufacturers are similar.  One of the reasons for it was the franchise costs and the charges for service kit the Dealers neither need (nor want) but are forced to buy also at silly prices.

They have an almost captive market now with less and less DIY work being possible without either specialist tools, knowledge, unavailable parts or some computer or other.  Personally I find it frustrating.

Yep. Its £200 an hour here with Halliwell Jones Warrington. There are dignostic and parts costs as well. I accept these. Just not the oil.

I've just had a quote for GB oil from a forum friendly BM dealer, £240, 10l required.

Just spoke to 2 other BMW dealers and they both charge £505 for the oil. So £400 doesn't seem bad in comparison.

Not only are they a rip off but they are incompetent as well. Had to order a simple pipe and should have been ready for collection this afternoon. Turns out they ordered the wrong pipe. It was a 1 in 2 chance of the right one apparently. No brains to order both to be on the safe side and send one back. Not going  to Halliwell Jones again and no apology so far.

Premium brand....my arse....

go to an indy, get it done a lot cheaper, and also there are lots of other ATF's that are up to the spec and above, but for 8-speed 8HP transmissions ,anything that meets (Shell M-L12108 )is the key. I have used many different  ATF's full/syn, with good results. And for HP6 speed anything that meets (Shell M-1375.4 ).
