Considering an E70
Considering an E70
Evening chaps, new to the site and looking for information on the E70. I've had a good read through various topics and posts and its been very useful however I still have a few questions!
I have an E63 650i and a P38 range rover at the moment, both V8 petrols and I love them dearly however I have to face facts and that with my little boy now in a forward facing car seat I should really sell both and buy something a bit more sensible and practical. I was looking at later range rovers but knowing what I know I don't think I can do it to my self.
So I have arrived at an E70 that I hope will be more reliable (compared to a green oval!) machine. I don't do many personal miles a year, perhaps 5/6k a year as I have a company truck for the rest of the time. I was looking at hopefully less than 80k miles with the idea that in a couple of years when I'm ready for a change we should still be less than 100k to help resale.
I'm only entertaining the idea of a Pre LCI sd/35d with the twin turbo engine as the performance is noticeably better. I would love a 48i as its the same engine as my 650i but the listed 0-60 appears to be only 0.5 second quicker than the twin turbo diesel and with the huge difference in fuel economy and the big difference in road tax I really can't calculate any sort of man maths to make the petrol V8 worth it.
However having said that, I would consider an LCI 30d (anything else in the LCI is well out of range) mainly for the CIC system. Although the CCC in the pre LCI cars seems to be a step on again from the CCC in my 650i. Is the N57 engine dramatically better/more reliable than the M57?
The problem I have is that for 13k-15k there are a few smart pre LCI SD's available where as anything half useful in the LCI range is 17k, is it worth the extra? I can stretch up to that but I would rather spend no more than 15k if possible.
So after all the waffle, some more details on options. Was the smallest standard wheel a 19"? I've been told the ride leaves alot to be desired on the sport suspension and massive wheels with RFT. Are they all air sprung front and rear? I can see most of them have self leveling suspension. Is that just rear air? I have seen some specified with "standard suspension" taken from the vin. I have also read that the heated seats are an option but I've not managed to find one without as yet (good!)
There is a 3.0d for sale down the road from me so I thought I might have a look at that to get a feel for them, although from looking at them they appear to be quite similar in layout to the E63.
So to sum up, I plan on doing a fairly low mileage, mainly family days out and perhaps holidays etc. Is the E70 a good machine for this? M57 reliable? What are the best options to keep it comfortable?

Re: Considering an E70
A few musings for you from a long-time X5 owner (whose previous car was a P38 Rangie!). I have recently upgraded from my E53 4.8is to an LCI E70 40d M-Sport. My first X was acquired in 2010. Like you, I loved my P38 and owned it for around 7 years. It definitely had absolute nightmare moments and main dealers were just awful, but it served me well for 150,000 miles. I really changed for interior comfort reasons and the prospect of potentially facing an engine rebuild at some stage in a high mileage p38. The E53 4.8is felt so much more refined and was just far,far better built than any Land Rover products I have ever seen with loads of toys and extras and was certainly a lot more comfortable and well equipped! Certainly not without its problems, but I kept it under extended warranty in the BMW network all these years and we still own it, albeit now semi retired at 135,000 miles. The warranty was worth its weight (cost) in gold. The V8 was and still is, fabulous and I do miss it.
Cue the E70. I would have loved an F15 M50d but the prices are way out of my bracket, unfortunately the M50d E70s also carry a huge premium which I could not justify, so I hunted for an LCI 40d instead, withn the AUC network. This is still a lot more than the price range you are looking at, but a quick look on the AUC site shows a few preLCI cars under £20k. There a far more on Autotrader, Pistonheads, ebay etc but I simply would not buy an X5 outside of the BMW main dealer network, but thats my personal choice.
The CCC certainly seems to be perfectly acceptable for what it is as long as you realise that recoding and adding connectivity options is limited. I am much happier to have found a really well specced LCI with CIC as it gave me more options for music streaming, remote app access, hard drive, nav, front loading cd which is also a dvd player etc. None of this is essential, however, and a well specced preLCI CCC is just as likely to keep its owner content with ICE.
The 40d is very nippy for such a big car and the LCI upgraded gearbox is silky smooth. The cabin is a pleasure to be in - long drives ecome an absolute pleasure and make my old 4.8is feel quite agricultural by comparison!
Mine came with huge 21" BMW OEM wheels, runflats, but ride quality surprisingly good. Definitely not as bumpy and harsh as the 20" wheels on my 4.8 were. I have purchased a winter set of 18"s for the E70, also runflats as recommended on the bmw configurator for my particular model. I think 18" is the smallest wheel which will fit an E70. Very early preLCI models were fitted with 18" wheels as standard, style 209 I believe. Later ones had 19" standard wheels.
No room for a spare if you have the third row seating, so runflats a good idea unless you want to take up your bootspace with a temp "biscuit" spare. The models with third row seats have uprated rear suspension and the climate control extends to the third row seating as well.
Heated seats pretty much essential unless you enjoy freezing leather much of the year - it was an option though, not just sandard, so check. Another great option to find is front comfort seats - these were very expensive specs and are fully electric and wonderfully adjustable. Much nicer than standard sport seats, although these are pretty good, to be fair.
If you see a car you like, its easy to get the factory spec online if you have the reg, but you probably know this.
As with all BMWs, there are loads of options - I love the comfort seats, the upgraded loudspeaker system, rear entertainment option, factory towbar with uprated cooling, and rear camera system with topdown display. others on here like the HUD, personally I find it irritating but many really like it. Things like heated steering wheels are nice but def not essential. The media package was an optional extra - so check this carefully, Professional Nav is the one to go for, not standard business systems. On PreLCI cars, if you want the most flexible music streaming options, check that the special bluetooth cradle option is installed, 6NF I think it is? On LCI cars there is a combox, so this hardware isn't needed and BMW Apps can be retrocoded (as indeed mine was) by specialists /geeks who do such things!
Good luck in the search, although preLCI low mileage high spec cars are probably becoming quite rare now, there will be a car out there for you!

Re: Considering an E70
If you want to stay with the pre-LCI version, the very very late ones may be fitted with the CIC systems (greater number of buttons on the iDrive controller is the giveaway). A few were updated just before the changeover so I'm guessing very late 2009 or early 2010 build (not registered) dates.
Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Thanks for the information and replies guys.
I have to say I was at a restaurant today in the P38, when we left an 09 plate E70 was next to us and I was surprised that it didn't appear to be any bigger than the old rangie! It appeared to be a scruffy heap as well, it drives me had how people can let nice cars get in such a state! I digress...
Interesting to hear that a few pre LCI cars got CIC, that will certainly be something to look out for. My heart says I should be looking at an LCI vehicle mainly for the 8 speed gearbox but I don't feel I can stretch to that. Having looked at my mileage for this year I have done about 4300 personal miles in 10 months between the two vehicles (vs 40k a year in my work vehicle!) so the initial mileage does not worry me to much.
The options situation seems quite similar to the E63, I do have professional nav and logic 7 in the 650i at the moment and the 4.8i's engine.... I do keep wondering if I should find a V8 E70, end of the day for the miles I do does the fuel economy matter? And I would have thought the V8's would generally have a higher spec than the oil burners.
The biggest problem is now I've spotted the cost of Porsche Cayennes, although as a rule i'm not a porker fan but I could make an argument for a Cayenne Turbo!

Re: Considering an E70
Purely personal observation, but the Cayenne is such an ugly bug........ :blink:and is really just a VW Touareg in Porsche disguise!! Maybe look at Touareg's as well. I did read some reviews about huge repair bills, but that is of course applicable to most of these cars, I guess!

Re: Considering an E70
Yeah I've knocked the cayenne idea on the head.... a moment of cold induced madness I think
The problem I have is the E70 is same generation as my E63 which is not a bad thing but I can't help feel I'm missing a trick by not moving to an F series (or at least something fitted with CIC). I've looked over a couple I've seen in carparks and what surprised me was the condition of them... they were scruffy articles with the wheels kurbed and bumper scuffs etc and it occurred to me, these are family vehicles which are probably heavily and roughly used hence ending up in such a state. I'm sure some are well looked after but these two didnt inspire me. Plus the relative lack of performance and poor economy compared to other vehicles in the BMW range... Waffling here I have moved to looking at F01 7 series which appear to be the bargain of the century.
I've got an NP300 navara for work which I have elected not to have personal use of but I can change that which would provide me with a large 4x4 should I need it.
Having said all that, tomorrow I'm going to have a look at an F01 and an E70. I've managed to find a couple of examples near by and I've a local job to go so it'll be good to have a proper look at them both.

I noticed you mention other exotics cars such as a Porsche but it may be worth doing a bit of homework on the running costs for both a BMW (break my wallet !!) and a Porsche (pick one really special car - how expensive !! ) poss quotes from both main dealer and Indy as it can be expensive especially if they become problematic.
For example when looking for my E53 I rang a local Indy garage and asked them about probs and the cost to fix them and the whole sunroof cassette mechanism is about £2.5k to do from an Indy if it goes wrong or air suspension can be £1.5k . Hence I bought a non sunroof car without front air suspension, also a car with LPG conversion meant the servicing cost was greater.
Again the same is true with both cars mentioned and although the cars can be fairly affordable to buy the servicing can be a shock or even just the costs of replacement parts when doing diy can be expensive especially if having to get the bits from the main dealers and I guess that's why they were all 50k plus cars in their day.
With regard to the dilemma of whether you get a V8 E70 or a Diesel is a difficult one, for me I'm doing 2-3k miles a year in the X5 and a Diesel would not appreciate the short journeys 3 miles on a Saturday or infrequent usage once a fortnight and with Diesels they having probs with PDF filters, I decided on my E53 for a petrol one and when looking for an E70 I started looking at 35d and 40d but I couldn't find the right spec car or justify the cost and settled for a petrol version.
The downside on the 4.8i or the later 5.0i (4.4 turbo) is fuel consumption, but if using any of these big cars whether Diesel or Petrol round town none are great for that in which case your better of with a smart car or a Nissan Leaf ) but on the low mileage that I was dong when I did the calculation the extra fuel cost would not out weigh the extra purchase cost over 5 year period.
The upside is the performance and the sound and with a 4.8 the lower purchase prices, and no issues with dpf filters, and the some cars have a higher spec than some diesels, but possibly the petrol are likely to have worse depreciation as less sought after by the masses, but again swings and roundabouts.
Finally, I think it's worth driving both variants as I was impressed with the diesels both the earlier 35d and the later 40d with the 8 speed box and if mine was a daily driver I would have bought one over a petrol car every day of the week, but as they say the choice is yours.
Hope that helps a bit

Graeme, how are you finding reliability with the X5 V8? I've hear horror stories about CCV issues, blue/white smoke etc from the 4.8 engine. Is it not what it actually is?

Re: Considering an E70
Hi
I had a facelift 4.4 E53 and had no probs with CCV but some have encountered probs.
Again on the E70 I don't have the 4.8i but the later 4.4 turbo, and I'm not really sure what the cause of it is, could it be down to maintenance or just that be the older cars are more susceptible for whatever reason. However, from what I read on the posts on here once the CCV's are replaced the car runs fine, which is good to know.
I know of one person had a prob with the 4.4 turbo, but that turned out to be the hpfp bank, and once that was replace again it ran fine. With my car I made sure I got a two year warranty to help provide peace of mind just in case.
Personally, I make sure I let the car warm up before pushing the engine in anyway and again I let it cool down when finished, it just what I do with all my cars as I think it lets the heat dissipate a bit after a run.

I had a facelift 4.4 E53 and had no probs with CCV but some have encountered probs.

Graeme, how are you finding reliability with the X5 V8? I've hear horror stories about CCV issues, blue/white smoke etc from the 4.8 engine. Is it not what it actually is?

I have the same engine in my 650i and it is a wonderful engine, smooth and endlessly powerful. I've had no issues in the last 11k miles. I do feel that the biggest problem with them is the very lengthy oil change intervals cause oil to get in a very poor state, especially on short journey vehicles.
The earlier 4.4 has a secondary air system which is the biggest problem with the N62, the 4.8 did away with the system and so is much more reliable.

Re: Considering an E70
I guess the internet made me perceive that the 4.8i engine was much worse than it actually was. Thanks anyway.

Re: Considering an E70
Hi,
I have had both 4.8Is and 40d...........( as well as 3.0 & 4.4 ).
Much as i love a V8 and am a huge fan of everything V8 powered, I have to admit that the 40d is a stonking car and the twin turbo diesel is very well suited to the X5. I have a E70 40d SE......
As per the previous advice, comfort seats, heated steering wheel, NO hud and M sport suspension delete but kept the 20" RFT tyres........ rides perfectly .
No sunroof, ( been there had the bills no thank you ) , and its been 100% reliable. Only issues have come from the piss poor main dealers all of which seem incompetent .
Its a mile muncher. The 8 spd g/box works very well and i would say is worth the extra and as a question isn't the road tax cheaper for the 8 speed ? I might be wrong.
Its been a cheap car to run and much cheaper than the 4.8iS I had .
The only gripe I have is the cost of RFT tyres...........
As for quality..........again its just my opinion, but an X5 is miles better quality than anything from land rover.
Buy one , you won't be disapointed.

Yes VED is less in the 40d than the 35/sd. Different EU approval.
If you don't like the HUD you can always turn it off. Personally I like it but tother half isn't as keen.

Re: Considering an E70
just fit a kufatec bluetooth unit to ccc if you end up in a pre lci without cic. They make superb bluetooth units which integrate and mimic original bluetooth but allow streaming etc.
