40D groan/whine at low revs when cold?

Hi all,

Recently I've noticed my 40D groaning or whining a little, it happens at lowish revs (under 2.5k) only really when cold and it's more noticeable under load so while accelerating and more-so accelerating up an incline.  It doesn't really sound like turbo noise to me as I'd expect that to be more constant.  Seems to be linked to engine speed rather than road speed.

Car is currently in for a service and I've asked them to look in to this while they also sort out the boot under AUC warranty (one of the electric lifters has failed).  The service adviser called earlier to let me know they were waiting for approval on the boot lifter and he mentioned they couldn't detect the noise I'd reported.  I had told them it's only really apparent when the engine is completely cold, they will re-test in the morning, I've also offered to go and take a tech on a ride to demonstrate it if they still can't detect it.

Perhaps it's normal but I hadn't noticed it before a month or two ago.  I know one member with a 40D has had a cracked exhaust manifold which makes me worry.  Don't want to fall out with the dealers by insisting they track down an issue that's not there but on the other hand I also don't want to have them fob me off and then be faced with a huge bill in a years time once the component that's currently groaning fails completely and I have no warranty left.

Just wondering whether other people have noticed similar noises?

JBF.

Hi there, you have posted in the E53 forum -sounds like you have an E70, though.  Maybe mods could move the post for you -  also perhaps add your Xes model year etc to your signature - , it will help people respond.
