4.4 gearbox issue - ZF box?

Hi, Would anyone know if the gearbox in a 2000 4.4 is likely to be the ZF box? I've tried to get underneath but the car is at the side of road and a bit dodgy to be lying around.
The reason being is that it's in fail safe mode and left me with 5th only. I've had it scanned for codes of which at least two were found which didn't mean anything to me but the garage were thinking it could relate to solonoids, if I've got that right.
The car was driving fine until it went to kick down but jumped 2 gears I'm thinking and then flashed up failsafe mode with 5th only working. I did manage to limp home and turned the engine off and back on 10 mins later and it worked as normal and allowed manual selection too, but then dropped back into failsafe and has stayed like that.
Has anyone else had similar? Am I right in thinking it's likely electrical as it's still got the ability to pull away and drive in 5th?
It's booked in a garage to have electrics looked over and fluid checked next week but am I likely looking at a replacement box?

It's a ZF 5HP24 gearbox, also called A5S440Z.

Ok, thanks for that. It gives me chance to price up replacement options now.

Didn't the early pre facelift have the GM 5 speed gearbox ?

But which cars?  Realoem says the 4.4 has the ZF.  I was expecting GM too....unless the parts data base is wrong?

EDIT - just rechecked, and it seems the 3.0i & 3.0d are GM but the 4.4/4.6 are ZF boxes......well they are according to the parts database. :(

As usual X5Sport, a fountain of knowledge.

It probably because the GM was pretty much on the edge of what the 3l could put through it without a bit of BMW modding therefore not having enough capacity for the V8 output!!

But then I refer you to my signature!!
