Topic 'symbols'

I've done a few searches for this but not found the answer - apologies in advance if there is something blindingly obvious that I've missed...
What do the symbols underneath the word 'Topic' represent when you look at the forum index. Yoi know, some look like a block of text coloured black, some are coloured red and some have the text flashing.
