Does anybody have any recommendations on cleaning kits that are available? Or any products in particular that I should pick up to keep my X5 clean?

Theres a decent car wash near the train station,  i was there yesterday
As for cleaning stiff i just use poundshop shampoo and a decent wax for after.
Try some of the car detailing forums for proper expensive stuff, theres some proper ocd cases on those forums but they do know their stuff.
Personally i can't be bothered spending 14hrs cleaning a car that will be dirty 10 minutes later )

Get yourself some decent car shampoo, a bucket with a grit guard, a decent wash mit and a good quality drying towel, that's the washing taken care of. Next you'll need a good glass cleaner with a waffle cloth.

A clay bar with some quick detailer will help get rid of any stubborn contaminants on the paint. Next you need a sealant and a wax to top that off, if that's going a bit far for you then get something like Dodo juice supernatural hybrid which is a sealant/wax in one, gives a good finish too.

All this stuff really comes down to is time and money, personally I luv making my car shine, the wax I use is £120 a pot, some people would think that's excessive but trust me the rabbit hole goes a lot deeper than that.

Actually you need two buckets (google the two bucket method). Also have a look on detailingworld.co.uk ...... There is a Zymol wax that is £30,000 a pot and no its not the most expensive you can buy

If it's your first time waxing go for a hard was as its pretty much fool proof to apply.

If you really get into the list is endless for detailing gear I literally something to everything and more. On the wash side all my products are the same for both my MX5 and my E60 however I use different polish/glazes/waxes because or the difference in colour.

Like anything if you look after it it will look after you.

Actually I prefer the 1BM and use my hose to rinse my wash mitt after each cycle, I find it better than dunking it in water that's getting progressively dirtier, it also ensures you don't get debris in the wash bucket.

Lots of different ideas, find one that works for you, exactly the same with cleaning products, you find the ones you like by trying them out
