Felt a funny vibe and when home found the car didnt free wheel very well, got out and found one front wheel to be very hot so sticky caliper ?
I munch motorways daily so grime/salt..........

does sound like a sticky caliper.
i had one on a 330d and it made an awful racket/bad vibes on the motorway.
Until i had time to sort it out via a good dismantle/cleaning, i got by by pulling up on hard shoulder, poking a bar through alloy spokes and whacking said caliper with a hammer!! it freed it off and i gingerly carried on driving for miles avoiding touching the brakes again until absolutely necessary!
but yes, all that road salt definitely a problem.

Had new pads fitted a while back so they said they would look/clean FOC so this afto's job sorted.

It sound like a sticking brake caliper / piston to me aswell, don't know if you know what you are doing so I have added a link to outpost hint and tips hope it helps.

If it is/was a sticking caliper, and the brakes got very hot then it will probably be worth bleeding that one again too in case any fluid 'boiling' occurred. It will depend upon just how hot everything got, and what DOT number fluid you have in the car.

Brake sides stripped and cleaned, pads re fitted and all copper greased by tyre place who replaced pads a while back and no fault found !

Brought home and fine, then when going out last night got a huge wheel wobble/vibe at about 50, slowed and could feel brake binding, stopped and wheel was hot again.Return journey no vibe but again wheel getting hot.

Going to get into local Indy asap, any further thoughts chaps/chapesses ?

Did you check the piston was moving backward and forwards?

The car was in the tyre fitting shop so i dont know, they do brakes daily and are trusted. I would have hoped they checked such things but my local Indy will sort it as i cant.

did you check the wheel bearing that can generate savage heat and vibration

Like i said i didnt check it the garage did but would have the thought if a bearing gone it would vibe all the time ?

Indy said he "spends all his life swapping duff BMW calipers" on older BMW's and the only fix for mine was replacement. Symptoms for all were as i described, very very common fault he says.

To help others it was £165.00 all in with pattern high quality caliper (even casting said BMW in it) so its fixed. Also note i could have sold my old one on fleabay and nobody would know so dont buy used !

Hi I drove to my local filling station to check tyre pressure and noticed my front passenger wheel had collected more brake dust than the other wheels and was warm too touch, the brake disc was extremely hot, I checked the drivers side and the wheel felt normal and disc where hot but not as hot as the other side. I assume its the same problem as above, but I have no vibration at any / high speeds and doesn't pull to the side and braking seams normal (well normal since I had it, I know there is a braking problem as if I brake hard abs kicks in but I am not braking hard enough for abs to engage)

Is this the same problem as above and would this engage abs early?

Does the car pull to one side when you apply the brakes? It sounds like a sticky caliper issue, but it could be that one may actually not be providing enough force as an alternative to one 'over' braking. And this could cause the ABS to trigger as it is looking for a difference in wheel speed that normally means a wheel is skidding, or is on the point of.

I suspect the salt spread on the roads over this last winter coupled with the dry weather meaning it may have stayed on peoples cars may be going to cause a spike in the number of failures this year. And in some areas we've had gritters out in the last couple of weeks too.
