Stone Chip problem on X5M Sport

Post by X5Trace » Thu Feb 10, 2011 11:08 am

Hi to everyone newbie here, have been reading your posts with interest since I ordered my car in the middle of Jan and getting my daily X5 fix!! Thank you! :D

I am to say concerned to read on a number of different forums both here and in the US that there seems to be a design flaw that causes considerable chipping to the paintwork on the M Sport models I have read about the 3M film to protect those areas that are particularly prone but I have never had this problem with other vehicles. I don't want to have to put my hand in my pocket for further expense to have this done or to think about respraying having just spent all that money! The dealer has not mentioned anything about having this protective film and wonder whether it might get mentioned as the delivery date get closer.

I wondered what experience fellow owners have had with there M Sport models and am I best tackling this issue with the dealer before I part with the rest of my hard earned cash!!!!

Help and advice PLEASE. :?

One of the main areas of concern on the MSport models is the front area of the rear arches. As I'm sure you are aware the MSport's are not available with side steps which do cut down on the stones that are thrown up from the fron tyres, couple this with the fact that many of this model come with 20" wheel/tyre combo's which add to the situation.

I am not surprised at all that the dealer has not mentioned this and is also unlikely to do so, why would he? All this being said you have gone for AW so the chips will not show as the undercoat is also white.

There was quite a bit of chat about film protection in this thread http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... 687#p14687 which may help you if you have not already read it.

Finally, welcome aboard xdrivers  and don't forget say hello to the rest of the guys & girls on here in the Newbie section ;)

Thanks Chompers, yes I did enquire about the side steps and the dealer explained they were no longer an option and Yes I have also gone for the 20" wheels... Great :(

The only reason I say 'thought the dealer might have mentioned' was I had seen some discussion about it was a factory fitted option. Will try to locate the thread but I have read so much on these forums it's hard to remember where. It could have been on one of the US forum's.

It's good to know that being White the chips may not stand out as much as say on one of the darker colours so that gives me some reassurance. It would be nice to hear from someone with a White M Sport to see what their experience has been.

I have this problem and dealer is currently waiting for BMW to respond as a warranty claim, apparently they have repaired several before FOC. This includes repainting and applying a film.
