Hi guys

My dad has just bought, with my help, a X5. By his belief, what is his is ours, so technically I own it too
Everyone who has sat in it loves it, but the neighbours haven't said anything. The family do love it. Maybe in a few months I can drive it too 

We're really glad we bought it, it's our first big car purchase. We also own a XC90 D5 and an E39 528i, but the XC90 might be going.

I just want to say that I appreciate all the help this forum has gave, the buyers guide on the E70 forum really helped with purchasing. I lurked initially but have now grown a pair and made an account. Hopefully I can take use of what is here!

Thanks Sanj, your car looks really nice too. I'm surprised by the lack of modification one can do to the E70 - retrofitting seems like a big issue and very costly too, you certainly have the upper hand as the E53 would be much easier to work on.

BMW introduced a licence key system for many of the options which makes upgrading more challenging unless you can generate a key.  I get the impression that a single firmware config is 'blown' into memory with keys required to turn different parts of it on.

There is an ongoing review within the EU to either ban modding or make it very difficult outside a dealer network.  Some of this is being forced by the industry as it is liable for a range of areas long after the vehicle ceases production and not surprisingly they want to limit that liability.  Lock everything down and you know where you stand.  Owners are not thought to be responsible enough it seems!

X5sport, good point. Although, there is a Mercedes specialist which has one mechanic who has done OEM retrofits to BMW's. He says he can do X5's as well. He told me about how he has retrofitted E90's with OEM xenons, only for it to cost £1600 to do the job. So, maybe I might try him.

It was much easier to retrofit on the older cars, definitely. The E39,E38,E53 etc shared lots of components so was easier to retrofit. It's a shame how many parts are shared on more modern BMW's and yet still its costly and difficult to retrofit basic items.
