20" Non RFT vs 19" RFT Experiences?

I’m collecting my E70 LCI tomorrow, although I won’t be running it until I sell my E53. However, even during the test drive, the ride was quite a bit firmer than I’m used to. Both 19” tyres, same profile and size and both "sport" suspension, but obviously run flat tyres on the E70.

Whilst the 19’s work on the E53 perfectly, I do think 20's look good on the E70. However I’m very hesitant to move to 20’s since I can only assume from a drive in my mates E70 that the ride will get even worse with the lower profile and wider tyres and generally more fidgety on the road.

However, my question is, are 20" Non RFT's comparable or better than 19" with RFT's? If not, I'll stick with 19's. I always remove RFT from my Beemers, dreadful things!

Would love to hear your experience.

Hi main reason for having run flats are being able to carry on your journey if you got a puncture , most E70 s don't have a spare wheel , or the F15 so you either buy a spare or carry 2 tubes of repair . Tyres especially run flats have got better over time but the main feature to watch out for is sport suspension which is hard which ever wheel size you have !
99% of people would consider the 18" wheels to be most comfy ride although I can't think of the last time I seen one with them on unfortunately vanity always comes before practicality . The best option would be to buy 20" wheels run the run flats off them and change the 19" tyres to winter , giving you 6 months of comfort and 6 months of spin rejigging .

Morning,

Thanks for responding. Yeah I’m aware of the “pitfalls” of non rft, as I say, it’s the first thing I normally do. I’ve had one puncture in 20 years of driving, so a risk I’m willing to take.

So I got my E70 last night. Ride is actually perfectly acceptable when on a country road, not driven in town yet (where my test drive was) But what is very noticeable is how much it moves around on the road, following the camber or any surface defects, the E53 doesn’t do this at all. The E70 had an alignment just 10k miles ago, so don’t think it’s that.

I’d need the arch extensions if going 20”, which is absolutely fine as they look so much better. Wil price up tyres, another downside vs 19’s I suspect.
