Does the battery need to be disconnected in order to remove the passenger and/or drivers seat?

Nope - just don't turn the ignition on until all the connectors are re-attached, otherwise you'll get the airbag light on the dash.

Just wondering .....
I am planing to buy a Front Passenger seat to replace the driver's seat due to worn sidewall since it is impossible to get a driver's seat in a very good condition.
I take it that it is easy to swap the passenger seat on to the driver frame without issues?

Are the bolsters the same for both seats? I haven't checked.
It will be fiddly but any things possible. Remember to take lots of pics and do a 'How To'.

it kind of looks the same. will double check again ...
And my thinking is that it makes economic sense for bmw to use same seat on different frame, but what do i know!

You will finish up transferring your replacement seat covers onto the original divers seat frame. This because of the seat belt anchorage point, which makes the seat frames handed. Doing this will also avoid having to re-route the seat harness.
Remember to disconnect the battery, as the seat belt mounting has wiring to it that is linked to the airbag system
