Wanted E70 BMW bike Rack

Hi
I know its a bit of a longshot but does anyone have the BMW bike rack for an E70 that screws into the rear towing eyes?
I'm interested in buying one, but would also be interested on views or opinion's about it.
My E46 has a towbar and I have a Thule rack that works great, but I'd love to save the hassle and expense of getting a towbar fitted to the E70.

Hi Sid
Thanks for your reply, my only issue with roof mounts are that we plan to use the X5 to travel through the Chunnel 2 or 3 times a year, they charge extra for roof mounted bikes, and you have to go in with the lorries, so I wanted to avoid it if I can. Also not sure how well it will work with my full suss mountain bike (heavy)
I'll probably end up getting a detachable towbar fitted as I have one of the top of the range thule racks that carries 4 bikes, and I find it great to use.

Hi Jagr
Yeah did see that one, but on further investigation, they are in Australia hence the £50 postage charge and no doubt a 3 week wait.  :)

I wonder if I could use this and get a my local main dealer to price match?
Thanks Jagr

I know what you mean about carrying bikes on the roof but have you considered access to the boot if they are rear mounted?
It might not be a problem for you or the tail gate may clear the bike frames but I thought it worth mentioning !

Hi Titan
The Thule rack I have at the moment hinges forward to allow access to the boot, I belief from reading a couple of the American forums, that the towing eye mounted BMW rack has a similar arrangement/function.

I have the Bmw rack that screws into the towing eyes and it's bloody brilliant! Absolutely recommend it, managed to find mine on eBay and has been a great purchase compared to the roof bars I had for my old M3. It tilts to allow the boot to open when fully loaded, locks to the car and both bike arms have locks so secures the bikes too. And is a well made bit of kit, keeps everything tight, used mine a lot.

Hi Chappers76

I have read your post about the BMW rack and this thread with interest as looking for a bike rack shortly.

Can I ask does the BMW rack with the bikes fitted to it then obscure the car lights and number plate and if  so do you have a separate light/number plate board fitted?

Reason for asking is the Thule ones I looked at do have a light/ number plate board built in as to the rack

Cheers
Graeme

Hi Graeme - good point. In short, yes, it does obscure the number plate but there is a spot on the rack to put a spare plate - don't think it has lights though.
