Red engine oil light flicker on E53 2003 3.0d

Hi all,

After a 20 mile journey I got stuck in traffic and noticed the red engine oil light flickering on and off. It was only whilst in 'drive' and disappeared once I got going again. But when I stopped at home there it was again.

Could anyone possibly shed some light on what this may be about? I've checked the oil level and its ok.

Thanks in advance.

Sunny

Could be a faulty oil pressure sensor, wrong oil grade or crap filled filter.  I thought the light was a low pressure indication so if flickering that would tend to point towards inadequate oil pressure at low rpm, or a sensor issue.  I can't remember what part of the feed the sensor monitors.

I had my pressure sensor changed twice under warranty after spurious 'Stop engine, Low Oil Pressure' warnings.

If the filter is clogged then you won't get enough pressure, and if the oil is too 'thin' the same will happen, especially at low pump rpm (engine idling).  How many miles on the engine?  Any sign of leaks, or smoke?

It could also be a failing pump or worn bearings, but go with simple first  :)

Thanks for your reply mate.

The cars done 133k.
I'm having the oil and filter changed this week and will go from there.

Do you happen to know What oil grade is the best to use..i always get 2 or 3 choices when I put my reg in for some reason. My engine is the M57 2001 onwards.

Thanks

5w30 is pretty much the default, some use 0w30 (though in a higher mileage engine that might be to thin).  Most dealers use Castrol Edge FST, but as long as it meets BMW LL04 and ACEA C3 you won't go far wrong.
