I've had this car some time now and always thought it was a 4.4l v8. Opened the bonnet today and saw this.... now I'm really confused?

No - he's quite wrong. That does indeed refer to your engine size. You probably have one of the few 7.8L Special Editions, created to commemorate the anniversary of Franz Josef Popp, founder of BMW. The 7.8L engine was his first and most radical/famous invention. There should be a metal plaque somewhere under the bonnet, saying 'Edition Popp' and a manfacture number (only 16 were made, to signify 1916, when the company was founded).
I believe there are only a handful in the world - you're a lucky guy. Look after her. I wonder if any others made it to the UK? Is yours a left-hand drive?

It was well hidden, but after much searching I found the plaque..... you have to remove the engine cover and you'll find it near the offside valvetronic motor..

Thanks for that. I'd have scoured the bodywork under the bonnet to find it, but it seems to be very well hidden. I wonder why. Is it on the engine block or the bodywork? Any chance of a pic?

Oh, such a shame, it's all back together now so can't take a pic. On the 1st April 2017 I'll go under the cover again and post up the plaque...

And that minimum is strictly the spec for £50 notes.... Any smaller denomination and capacity must be increased.
