Shudder while braking

I've got a problem with the car shuddering (can feel it through the steering wheel and certainly other passengers are starting to notice it) when braking from 40mph+. The weird thing is it only occurs during a certain point in the braking process (when approx 50% pressure is applied) and the rest is smooth. Anyone any ideas and what I should be checking? Brake pads all look fine, no warping on the discs and from what I can see everything else underneath looks in place, but tbf I don't know what I'm looking at.

I would say your front thrust bushes are starting to give up.

I had this issue and it was the lower wishbone on drivers side and that seemed to fix the problem.

Mine was flagged up on the MOT.

Good luck.

I have this - several times - an on each occasion it was different things
it could be tyres, wheels, wheel balance, warped discs, sticking calliper, upper/lower front control arms/bushes, etc etc etc

You are unlikely to see warped discs simply by looking at them - if you could see the warp them it is most likley undriveable!

I knew it.. I recently had both front control arm bushes replaced with poly and new lower ball joints. My car never had any brake wobble. The nearside bush was totally ripped apart and the centre part was resting on the outer edge. The only symptom I had was a jolt in the steering if I jabbed the brake pedal circa <5mph. Now its all done it feels really tight. Our other X5 feels sloppy in comparison- and thats only done 70k.

Yes it seems like a big expensive job but 185 for parts and a good local garage about 100 for labour but a massive difference I thought the back was a big difference when I had all that done and switched to coils but the front as you say feels tight steering very sharp and responsive excellent

Could you perhaps share the eBay link please?

I've done wheel alignment, wheel balancing and brand new discs and pads and still feel a vibration at speed on the motorway, especially on overrun. Suspect bushes are shot.

Garage reckons it is the front bushes - looked like they were on their way out but they wanted £310 to change them which I thought was steep for a relatively easy job.

I'm pretty sure my rear subframe bushes need doing too so I'm going to shop around to see if anyone will do the lot for a better price.

Lower thrust arms cause this as many have discovered. Initially it's always assumed to be discs.
