My sunroof inside cover opens all the way back, smoothly with one click of the switch as it should, if i push the switch forward to close it again, it moves forward but only about 2 inches at a time, its smooth but it seems like there are preset stages its going too which surely cant be right !! well not that many anyway ? anyone else had this ?

Try putting your key in position 2 and pushing the button up and hold it for about 30 seconds - I think that is how you reset it, could be position 1. It might be that it is in service mode...

Known faults with the pano roof.
If above doesn't work & you get a pro to diagnose its faulty then there is a repair kit available though it may not deal with a badly damaged casette.
I think alfamale got repair kit & had same installed by an indy.
Labour costs could add up & thus the best labour rate deal may come from leaving car a while so they can work on the car in between other work.
If it's in BMW warranty then it's a case of booking it into the dealers, frustratingly once to diagnose & agree on paerts required & then second time to do the work.

It sounds more electrical... when I had mine in to have the sunroof sorted he did this to mine and it put the switch into a sort of manual control moving only a couple of inches at a time.
Check the Cassette too though for worn parts and uneven movement....

The repair kit is a red herring as it doesn't fix the fault with panoramic roof where the rear panels are stuck open in vent position. You can however buy the parts needed to repair the cassette runners albeit the dealers didn't even know they existing until I gave them the part numbers! I did do a detailed write up on the previous forum however I can't remember all the part codes now sorry.
Labour is the major cost with this job as it needs all the rood lining out and takes a good 9 hrs from start to finish. The garage I used in Droitwich were superb and very cheap cannot praise Northbank Garage enough

To be honest I think that this is where many of the problem arise from, infrequent use!!! I have the Pano roof on my Touring and did have on the 'X' I always made/make sure at least once a week that it is open up fully. While the Touring is still under warranty it's not to much of an issue but I did make sure of checking the 'X's channels when the roof was open to see if any dirt or rubbish was there that may cause issue. I also put some vasaline around to roof seals so that when they meet the roof they don't stick and put strain on the workings/runners/motor when re-opened.
