My car in may for mot and service. I need new pads and disc's on rear. Car only ever been touched by bmw Derby. They want £523. Rang a few places and garage near me that sells nice cars and do services etc quoted me £280 and they said exactly same disc's and pads but just not stamped BMW. Thoughts please

You can price up parts from eurocarparts which items like pagid will be oe spec I believe

But you'll need to find out the sizes
Near £600 from BMW is expensive but then that's BMW labour pricing pushing it up like the other services you would have had

I was quoted £368 just for rear pads from BMW... went with a specialist and got front and back pads for £240 fitted... Brembos.

Buy from ECP and spend an hour DIY and save some cash!

+1 for ECP.  Same as OE but without a BMW badge.  Did our E46 for about £90 plus my time to do it.

agreed, always better to DIY if you can. I love to do my own stuff but time constraints don't always allow me to

My service indicator tells me that I need to replace my front brakes in 1300 miles time, although I think they need doing now. A colleague of mine had suggested that the service indicator for the brakes would need resetting once they have been replaced. I assumed that this would happen automatically? This has always put my off DIY.

I would definitely consider ECP though, I've always used them for my brake components.

Yes the brakes need to be reset ?

Service indicators are easily reset I believe through the orange lcd screen inbetween speedo and rev counter

But with brakes you also need new wear sensors too

These wear sensors seem like a bit of a rip off to me, they're not cheap from a main dealer

You can get them from ECP too and unless they've been triggered by worn out pads, they don't need replacing.

Did mine on the E53, rear discs pads sensors, rear handbrake shoes. All from ECP, only cost about £125
Cheap as chips. Pagid discs and pads, the discs were galvanised or sprayed that way on the cast parts to stop rust.
Great value I thought.
Handbrake was still S*** though.

I'm in exactly the same position with mine. Only had dealer maintenance etc, but was reluctant to pay well over the odds for brakes. At the end of the day, unless your running a high performance track car, to most of us, brakes are brakes and are regulated by what type of parts you use and what your requirement is regarding your style of driving etc.
After being given some advice on just what BMW recommend to be fitted, I priced the parts on a few sites and was astounded by the mark up the main dealers were applying.
I've therefore found a local reputable local garage, and they are fitting the best reccomended brakes parts and sensors, (Padgit) and I'm saving nearly £300 and still using genuine parts.
No there's no dealer stamp or the reassurance of any comeback other than the garage you use. But in all the years i've had brake maintenance carried out ive never found the need to complain.

thanks all, going to get it done at my local specialist and tell them to fit the ones advised on here. A job i can not do unfortunately, struggle to change bike brakes and tyres lol

Adjusting bike brakes (so they wouldn't squeal) was always impossible

Car brake discs and pads are an easy job so long as the bolts aren't seized.  I feel safer knowing that I've done a proper job on them.
