The unit is a sealed LED device.  The most common problem with the older ones is caused by the gasket breaking down so letting water in that corrodes the unit and stops the lights working.  The unit has to be replaced completely but they do come with new gaskets that are supposed to be much longer lasting.  Mine had to be done about 2 years ago when they were 6 years old.  Cost roughly £100 per side depending on the current price for the units.  Fitting is  straightforward and quick so I had the local BMW body shop do the job for me.

Hope this helps,  Graeme
