Grille painting

Post by barachello » Wed Feb 24, 2016 8:19 pm

Has anybody tried painting the standard e83 grille?

I was contemplating painting it to resemble the titanium version.

Any tips for removal, and what the best colour paint match would be??

Thanks

I would have thought that as long as you got it really clean and then gave it a very gentle rub down for a 'key surface' then a coat of plastic primer followed by titanium silver spray should do it?

Getting it really clean will be important and you might want to use something like Isopropyl Alcohol to wipe it down before spraying to make sure any dust and grease etc is removed.  There are no doubt items such as 'tack wipes' from car paint places - or Halfrauds - that will do just as well.

Thanks for the reply.

My main concern was that the silver paint  had to be exact, but glad to hear that it may not be the case.

I take it the slats do not release from the frame?

You should be able to find an 'exploded' diagram on Realoem which might help.  :)

To remove from memory:

Open bonnet
Remove the plastic cover above the grilles (i think it was 4 tore screws)
Then very gently with an old credit/aa card slide it around the tabs to release the grilles

If they're anything like F15 grills, the slats are glued to the chrome surrounds.

Do the titanium grilles have a matt finish or gloss ?

In the process of painting mine now, but need to know whether to lacquer them or not ?

thanks

That's great, thanks for that.

I have painted the grilles tonight, so will leave them to dry overnight and see how they turn out.
