When I had an e61 you could get into menu which would do show lots of reading options?

Indeed. Defo worth checking the water temp. These seem to suffer from thermostat issues which will eventually lead to DPF issues due to lack of regen. Recently had the EGR and Main thermostats done on mine. Economy seems a little better since.
