E53 shudder when cold, worse in gear.

Hi all,  my X5 3.0d 2005 has developed an annoying problem. When started from cold, it shakes/shudders at idle.  Once it's warmed up/driven for 5 minutes it's fine. This is more noticeable when in gear wit my foot on the brake. Bit of white smoke on start up, pre heat message displays and goes out when freezing, never fails to start. If you stop and switch the engine off for over 10 mins (engine still warm) it will shudder for a few minutes again.

A few weeks prior to this I was getting a 'fuel inject' warning if you really boot it, which goes out when engine switched off then on again.  Had the codes read just said glow plugs and fuel rail pressure sensor. My mechanic suspected the fuel filter, ordered one and put some STP fuel system cleaner in for the meantime, this is when the shudder started?? Fuel inject warning is currently off,  but will come on if I floor it.

Also got a slight rumble when turning right at slow Bends from front end? Again could this be related to above shudder? CV boot? Now CV joint?

any help appreciated if anyone has seen this,  I'm new to the X5 (from land rovers) and love it, more so when running right ;)

If you've got a warning then it needs fixing.  Could be pump, pressure regulator, injector.  It sounds like you also need new glow plugs - a common issue.

Could be CVJ or wheel bearing, or just pads on disc.

The rumble could also be the front diff.  Check your tyres for tread depth and type match.  BMW transmissions will not tolerate incorrect tyres or wide tread depth/pattern differences very well, and if you ignore it you could get a shattered diff.  These cars are not built for true off-road and don't have the strength of the LR systems.

Safest tyres to use have a '*' mark on the side = made to BMW spec.  Not saying it is the tyres, just that it might be.

Plugs or control unit indicated by scan yet mechanic changed fuel filter & used an additive....bizarre.

I would go with the last diagnostic info & check the filter & additive were suitable.

Don't dismiss other issues but mindful you say it's lumpy since worked on.

I get the exact same on the wife's x5 2006
I've had it plugged In and the only Codes that come back are all 6 glow plugs knackered

Exact issues i had with the shuddering, but i had no dash warning lights.
I ran a bottle of Millers Eco diesel injector cleaner through it and it disappeared within 3 tanks of treated fuel.
Came back again a year later and another bottle of millers treatment sorted it. Been running the diesel treatment additive in every tank now and runs a lot better with no shuddering.

Most likely a partially blocked injector but not had time or real reason to start ripping it apart while there is no issue with running or mpg loss.

I'm thinking that the filter is blocked,  new one has arrived now so will replace it on the weekend.  Just weird how it's okay once it's been running for 5 minutes or so.

Sounds to me like you have 1 or maybe 2 injectors going, these will show thereself on cold starts sometimes.

Quick update.the shuddering got a little better when I topped if up with £15 worth of fuel, then better with another £15 top up a few days later. So I ran the tank as empty as I couldd,  filled it up and it has not shuddered since, even when freezing.  Shudder started once I added the fuel system cleaner and disappeared once it was flushed thru?
