Just out of curiosity.....

Could a transfer box from an x5 be rebuilt?

If not what is the cost of a new unit?

They can as long as you can get the guts.  If not then about £400 plus VAT would be a good guess?  There must be a couple of folks on here who have had it done.

It might be if they did it @ £200/hr plus VAT for the labour!  And it may only come as a complete unit with drive shafts!  :(

Hi, Just had a new transfer box fitted to my X6, total cost £2700, of that £2400 for the box and £300 labour. Done at BMW garage.  Car was under BMW extended warranty so only had to pay £250 excess

:o  kinell

Ah wait a bit, was that the rear one?  If so it's a clever gizmo with electrically controlled clutches for the torque distribution on the X6.  Only the X6 versions and X5M get those.

Rear one is a diff. Transfer box can be rebuild, new ones from 2400 + labour. Just depends if its 1st, 2nd or third generation of xdrive system.

You can get 'driveline' type warranties to cover just the hot/wet/oily/spinny bits which would cover the majority of the expensive parts if that helps?  The wear & tear clauses always bother me as it's not exactly clear how they define those phrases!
