good trustworthy specialist in the hinckley/Midlands area please
I am requiring a full transmission service (diffs/transfer/autobox)
I need a good specialist in the midlands who knows the correct method of changing the gear oil as it has to be done at a certain temperature.
Any recommendations guys? A quick Google brings up auto-teknik in Lutterworth and the independent bmw specialist in hinckley ran by Paul bramley.
Thx guys

Do it yourself. Simple. Dont worry about the temperature- when doing it if the sump is hot to touch then its about right. I did mine for about £110. I worried about it beforehand but researched and there are loads of how to's on the internet.
Remember that the trans fluid has to be drained at least twice so that the torque convertor is refreshed.
My method:-
Drive car up on 2 pving slabs under each wheel to get it level.
Loosen fill plug then drain sump.
Remove sump, swap filter, clean magnets then replace.
Refill, fit drain plug and run engine till sump is hot (circa 13min) and check level.
Drive for a few days then drain and refill.
Messy but easy.

I've been using BM Euroservice in Wolverhampton for all non-dealer work on my various BMWs for last 10+ yrs now. Mark and Paul are the main chaps who run it and provide a very professional service. I always found the work done to be of a high standard.
Not sure if they do transmission service though, never asked or have it done.

where did you buy all the stuff needed (oil/filter/sump/mechatronics sleeve)
i was led to believe that it had to be at a certain temp and then ran through the gears in a certain sequence

The sequence and temps are in the manual I linked you to. A web search should reveal the parts for the ZF box.
There is a thread on here about the oil types from a couple of years back if memory serves, with tips on what oils you should/should not use.

Trustworthy Specialist....
My God Man.... the word "Trustworthy" is a tough one these days...
suggestion : if there is a "Trustworthy" one within 50 miles, then go there..
a vehicle is only as reliable as the last person to wave a spanner near it !!
So, if some one here knows of a decent garage ANYWHERE, let alone near Birmingham, then go there me thinks.
There are a few good garages about, so word of mouth here is where you will find them I recon.

Had mine done at their place in Rochdale. £170 + VAT
I always say it's better to use a gearbox specialist over an indie for gearbox services, as they know these commonly used boxes inside out.

did they follow the procedure and replace the mechatronics sleeve?

[/quote] they replaced. Sel where some cable came out of the box, which is a known point at which can leak.
Is this what you re referring too
Mine was £210 inc vat and that was 3/4 years ago, so similar money.

They had a pile of pile of ZF boxes on their benches which they were overhauling. These guys can rebuild our boxes in their sleep.
A service shouldn't be a problem.
