Limp Mode & Thermostats?

As mentioned in my previous topic, my X3 (2.0d manual) has been going better than ever over the last week after changing to a full set of new star rated tyres. However, on Friday morning I was going up a steep'ish hill and put my foot down for power and nothing. It wouldn't go past 2,500 RPM until I changed down a gear and was back on a level surface and even then there was no more power. I pulled over and switched it off and back on and it was all good again. This morning I left for work and reversed out my drive and as I accelerated down the road the power had gone again. Again I switched it off and on and all good until I was 2 mins away from work and it happened again.
I know my thermostats are knackered, so could it be down to them? Just found it strange that it was more or less immediately in limp mode from start up.
