Hello,

I have 3.0 diisel (160kw), and i have some issues with my xdrive.

The problem is that my front wheels wount spin, it tryes but it wails..

So sympotomps and what i have done :
1. At first i had only 4x4 light on, replaced the steering angle sensor (got code with INPA).
2. Calibrated steering wheel with inpa.

Now is the light gone but still no 4wd, when i hit the gas (start agrassive acceleration fro 0) then i will get 4x4 (+ 4x4/ DSC inactive warning) light for some time (like 1 minute) then it will go away, no error is stored to memory..

3. Ordered new YAW rate sensor, maybe is that faulty (Found one post about that, hope it helps me..).

All ABS sensors are OK and show the same speed.
Any ideas what the F*ck to do next? (After i replace YAW rate senor).

E: Forgot to mention, the year of ther car is 2005

Failed transmission components as the 4x4 is permanent (albeit an All Wheel Drive system)?

Sounds like it could be the Transfer Box which holds the XDrive clutch might have packed in, or is slipping perhaps? 

With any luck kjb1 will be along as he's the expert on all things underneath to do with the transmission.

Damn.. XDrive has his own clutch?...

Anyway i made a fast video off the symptoms :

Maybe they are all normal, but the clutch just slips..(no 4x4 at any moment, like its just a RWD car witch loses power (the times when it should kick in first wheels..)

At the moment i have switched YAW sensor also without any luck

If I remember correctly the ATC unit which houses the Xdrive system uses an electrically controlled clutch to alter the tension on the pulley driving the front propellor shaft.  If that stops working then you end up with no front drive, or only a limited capability.  If the prop shaft is turning then you have to suspect a failed front diff as another option 

I think it's an 'ATC500' unit and bolted on the back of the gearbox.  Have a look on line to see how it operates.

Might also be worth checking the fuses in case it's something really simple like the fuse has blown!  I would have expected some kind of fault error to show up though.. ???

When this is gone, then it should have that "3 light syndrom" (ABS, DSC, BRAKE) i dont have any off them :/
But yeah, maybe it has some nice life and there is nothing left on that pinion and it just does not switch it on..

It would be freaking awsome..
i will check this out.

Beacause there is no error code, than it must be something mechanigal.. hope that it is something small, like that pinion..

Also check the front output shaft connection..
Ie the part where it comes out of the transfer box and joins the front prop shaft.

The splines there are prone to stripping and you will lose front drive.
The transfer box may be compensating for it to the rear.

On the pre facelift without the Xdrive you would lose all drive..
Not very handy when pulling off from a busy cross roads as I found out!!!

Okei i will check, bought it before the freaking snow came and did not notice any issues on tge car, it was just amacing and everything seemed to perfect to be true,

And now.. Hell yeah it was to perfect..
(4x4 light was taped in..)

The sad part is that i have no clue what is done with this xdrive, but i would like to get it up and runnung again, after i do it i sure will change all the oils in differs etc.

1. transfer case actuator May be faulty (pinion fully gone, otherwise i should have that "Ticking noise")
2. TRANSFER CASE FRICTION CLUTCH is sliping realy bad.
3. Chain removed? (Who knows what previous owner has done..)

And thats about it from transfer case side, all other issues in there would make some noise i think.

When no issues there then moving along to front diff..

Today i had some time to check that x.. It freaking hates me i think.

1. Transfer case accurator pinions seemed fine.

3. Now i have message that says i have inactive self leveling and also 4x4 light is on..

Can point 3 be related with tranny? -.-

Last point.....if you have had the battery off you need to start the car and turn the steering from lock to lock.  That should clear the 4x4 light.  The suspension warning is most likely down to a poor battery state.....and is a very well known 'scare tactic' by the car when nothing is actually wrong  >:(

Well i have to Admit that Batt was on all the time..

Tryed to clear all codes with INPA, no luck :/, even did the stearingwheel calibration, i think accurator went back litlebit wrong, hard to get it on when you can move the Tranny Clutch with finer..

Also did some lamp replacements in interior and maybe i managed to toch the Air Susp relay what should be behind glowbox?

i will see, when tomorow is my car town.. then it probaly leaks from somewhere, when it is nicely up then i will try that battaray reset. ( take wires town for 15 mins), hope it helps.

But yeah, hope someone can watch the video and confirm that Tranny Clutch is dead.

UPDATE: Lucky me, Self-Lvling is now self-fixed, car went to sleep and everything is fine with that now, and also all interior lamps are OK again, seems like my X was just tired and wanted to sleep a bit  ::)

Now i only need someone smart who can confirm that my Transer Case clutch is dead, then i will hunt it down and will fix it  >:D

Hi Guys, Yes clutch was dead.
It is waiting for new one atm, hope for good news at lunch..  ::)
i hope that tehere are no issues after that..

Transfercase + accurator? (dont know how that clutch motor is spelled) changed and i have fully working xdrive again  ::)
