Temp Guage Problem

Post by barachello » Sat Jan 23, 2016 7:44 am

Hi all, hoping for a bit of help with an issue I am having with the temp gauge in my 2004 2.0 x3.

I have only owned it for a couple of months, and have always noticed the temp gauge to go to between the first and second marker on the guage.

I plugged in my bluetooth scanner, and on a 12mile journey to work, via mostly dual carriageway, it never went above 60 degrees.

Spoke to the dealer I bought it off, and it was agreed that the coolant thermostat needed replaced.

This was done yesterday, and having driven to work again this morning, the guage only rises to, and no further than the 2nd marker.

Am I missing something, or what else could the fault be?

On the diesel models there is also a thermostat for the egr valve.

Don't know about petrol models

Would the egr thermostat cause the issues with the temp gauge though?

Unlikely as that works on exhaust gas and I can't see an immediate connection with the coolant loop.  Could be a faulty stat?  What temperature is it getting up to?

Previously it was getting no higher than 60 degrees, but I haven't had the chance to test it today, but will do so later hopefully.

Ok, drove the 12 miles home there.

Temp went up to 71 degrees at best, and still wavered up and down.

It seemed that if I was coasting or freewheeling, the temp would drop, but if driving it would rise?

Sounds like same issue mine has.

What would the symptoms be if it was the EGR stat that was knackered?

I will keep an eye on it over the next day or two, just to be sure.

I'm not sure about the egr stat symptoms

Would that suggest that the egr stat needs done too then ?

Sounds like it...

Wouldn't hurt to change it anyway since it appears so easy to do.
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

Hopefully that's all it is

The egr stat is in the coolant loop, so i'm guessing it would let colder water through to the engine thus giving a lower coolant temp reading.
