Bmw X5 e53 - 3.0d automatic facelift - new battery??

Post by zabe_1 » Wed Jan 20, 2016 12:14 am

Hello all,

My battery is buggered guys and wont start again today (been jump started numerous times now and even after a long drive and trying to charge it back up, due to me mainly driving low distances and the cold weather, it dies again.

Now im tring to figure out which battery to buy and really don't understand the whole AGM versus non AGm piece.

I want a battery that will last but at a ok cost, I found a company online, e-tyres, who will do mobile fitting and they have this battery. Will this do the job and will it be plug and play?

Which of the above would you pick, I don't know anyone to help jump start my car here (usualy need to call the breakdown people), so e-tyres is a good option that way, however I don't mind caling the breakdown (again) as I do have homestart then taking it to the kwikfit beside me to get one of the other batteries.

Will these do the job, I;m hopinf for a cheap and cheerful option that'll get me back on the road

Many thanks

plus one for euro car parts.
i bought a bosch s5 for mine four years ago. it had been struggling to start this winter and finally let go last week. i got the rac to diagnose a dead cell, and as it was still a year inside its warranty -took it back to euro car parts who exchanged for a brand new s5 there and then.  :D

New battery installed but guess what I found underneath which helps explains my battery woes to date!

a tiny battery which looked more like a battery for a astra, it was a 66aH ones, replaced with the bosch!

Suddently everything felt more tight and gear changes felt more quick, would a teeny battery in a car like this affect real world performed on an x5?

Also maybe the cars resetted itself potentially but felt quicker off the get go and gear changes felt more pronounced and no lagging!

you have to remember to vent it - search on here for how to do that. (and keep the paperwork for any warranty claim - S4 is 4 year warranty, S is five year etc - which one did you get?)

It might do as the electrical load on the X is quite high so the alternator would have to work harder to keep everything running.  That would increase engine drag as well as the battery not being fully capable of delivering to demand.

Someone really did a cheapo job if they only fitted that small a battery!

PS - don't forget the vent line as mentioned above.

oopsey on the vent line, will do that tonight then :)

Thanks all for your support and actually getting me to do some bits myself, never thought I could be able to do something like this myself. Honestly, I have zero technical skills mechanically, or is it zero mechanical skills lol

I went for the S4, I have the receipt, so will keep it safe.

Amazing the difference it has made tho, feels like how a BMW should feel. I agree on the cheapo job though! seriously, glad I changed it though now

thanks to all your help folks

If I remember correctly and X5 will surely advise. The protective cap on the (positive?) terminal is used as the vent plug, so if I'm right, hopefully you didn't throw that away........

The vent plug is on the positive end of the battery but not on the terminal. I had a Varta delivered today for mine which was £69. When I lifted the pump out of the way I noticed that the vent had never been attatched to the old Halfords battery.. The old one was just over 5 years old.

It is a commonly missed item.  The Bosch battery comes with little blanking plugs mounded into corners AFAIK but the little elbow and pipe often get either removed with the old battery, or forgotten about.  The vents are on the end, short side at or close to the lid join.
