x5 4.6 v8 owner for just over 1 month and it didnt go too well :/
Soooo after many years of wanting a x5 i finally decided to treat myself, i looked t around 6 before buying as wanted one that was spot on so i paid the man his money and brought myself a beauty of a x5, she is the 4.6 v8 model on brc lpg wearing a 52 plate with a very high spec list and came with fsh and every mot / reciept from new
well, after only owning the car a couple of weeks i had some numpty hit me up the rear, over £3k worth of damage (mainly bumper, god there expensive from bmw) but the blokes insurance paid out and a few weeks later happy days i was back on the road... but that happiness wasnt to last
A few weeks later just before xmas i started the car to warm it up as normal before the kiddies school run, all was fine and then all of a sudden i could here this funny faint rattling noise coming from the engine, popped the bonnet and out i jumped.... by the time i got from my seat to the front of the car to lift the bonnet the faint rattle had turned into a major rattle, quickly ran and turned engine off and thought "ok that wasnt good, best get someone out" rang the local garage they sent someone to investigate and after starting the car he said straight away "your cam chain guide have broken mate" he them removed the sump and oh hes there they all were, little bits of plastic everywhere
Had a long think over xmas and got some repair qoutes (cheapest being nearly £2.5k) but sadly i just couldnt justify spending another £2.5k on a car i had just paid so much for knowing that even get back if i did fix and sell on i would be lucky to get what i originally paid
Now my poor baby sits on my drive and on monday I took the huge leap and posted her for breaking on ebay, withing a few hours i had someone round buying parts, he brought a few of the stereo modules and the extended arch flares, i tell you what, seeing my pride and joy begin the start of its breaking process was a hard thing to watch
now before you ask why i didnt jus fix such a tidy car, here is my reasoning....
The way i see it is the car cost me £4250, if i was to fix the car for £2.5k thats means the x5 would have cost me a total of £6750 and then when i come to sell it on i may get my £4250 back if im lucky, obv having a repair like this done to a car will help it sell on but it doesnt really add value to a car, so in all id be loosing that £2500 id just spent on repairs, but by parting it out ill make my £4250 back alot easier without having to find the £2.5k to repair it
I have attached a few pics so you can see just what a beauty of a car she is....was
i hate the thought that i a few weeks time she will be a bare shell in a scrap yard

Sorry to hear that unfortunate situation and I feel your pain pal.
I'm in a similar dilemma for my 57 reg E60 lovely M-Sport with engine problems. I know I can get my money recovered by breaking it but don't want to get down that route.
I, by no means, have any meaningful knowledge of car values and life spans but the price you paid isn't low (IMO) for a 52 reg petrol X5, which is presumably due to well maintained history but a well maintained example of this v8 shouldn't have any timing chain problems - but it depends on mileage too to some extent. So what could've been the root cause of guides snapping?
I hope your next car gives you more enjoyment and motoring satisfaction.

From what I read the cam chain guides can go without warning once a car has done over 100k, mine is on 127k
I had no prior warning or funny sounds atal

good luck! i know the wheels are worth good money, bumpers about £250 front £150 rear, but then there will be alot of work to get the other £2500, interiors not worth much as nearly every x5 has leather all ready

shadrack.... its other parts that fetch good money too like the diffs alone will raise another 1k odd as there the 3.91 final drive units, then theres the gearbox, transfer box, lpg kit etc etc
mattyp.... yeah i wish tbh i had got the 4.4 as engine would have been so much cheaper to replace, but saying that it was the bodystyling and the extra power the 4.6 had over the 4.4 that swayed my opinion to buy the 4.6
