I bought a BMW 2016 sat nav upgrade from my local dealer for £110. It consisted of a USB stick and a code and took about an hour to install. My car maps haven't been upgraded since new in 2011. I was pleasantly surprised at this price.

Hi, a year on and I tried to order an upgrade on a USB stick through my local dealer in Aberdeen (I live in the Shetland Isles). They insisted that it could not be carried out this way and would need the car to be booked in for 2 days to do the upgrade themselves!!!!!
So if richy170 is still on the forum, which dealer did you get this from? Or does anyone know of a knowledgeable and helpful BMW Parts Dept?
Thanks in anticipation.

Depends on what model/spec car you've got.
Do you have a CIC with a USB in the front glove box? This is where you'd load the maps from.

Hi and thanks for reply, 2012 facelift X6 3.0D with Media package, Internet etc. USB in Glovebox etc. Nav has never been updated so is still 2012 version. I just got it as a 1 owner car in Feb, so am just starting to get familiar with it.

I would have thought it new enough to upgrade with USB
Mines a 2010 and it had never been updated, but I tried it in March and it worked fine.
Best new feature ..... 7-digit post codes.

What age of vehicle can you do the upgrade on using USB? I have a 59 plate X6 and it currently has the CD in with the sat nav maps and its constantly wurring around and it does my head in! Can I change the sat nav from disc to USB upload or even just a better system that doesn't have a disk that is always making noise! :'(

'CIC' iDrive is what you need and that arrived in MY2010. That uses a hard drive based system that updates from USB or DVD. You have the CCC iDrive which doesn't have a hard drive. You would have to update the system. It can be done but it won't be cheap and there is no official kit from BMW.

Thanks X5Sport. Certainly not worth the extra money then. We should have waited and got a 2010 X6. Looks like I will just have to replace the disc that is slightly scratched. The DVD player works fine as we have had that checked out by BMW but to replace the disc the ones I have seen on ebay are £50 odd pound! .....Will just turn my music up louder to block out the wurring noise! Got to admit my Audi was far better built than the X6
