Drivers side door lock fail

Hi guys/gals
Just wondered if anybody has encountered this issue with the drivers side door lock on their BMW X5 E70. Sub zero temperature last night went out to take my daughter to school got in to the car started fine as normal, on closing the drivers door the latch would not engage with the stay. Meaning the door was not locked and would not remain closed. I got the key from the fob and tried the physical manual lock unlock and door would still not engage with the stay. Tried a copious spray of WD40 around the mechanism and then using a screw driver I physically drew down the latch mechanism, on the door, into the closed "locked" position, this was with the door open, if you can follow? Now the lock was locked closed I was unable to get it to unlock ! I couldn't use the car as the door would not latch due to the mechanism not engaging with the stay. Throughout this whole event all the other doors functioned using the central locking facilities and the drivers door solenoid was seen to work with the pop up button moving up and down as normal, just seemed to be a physical mechanical with the mechanism. Eventually I used a screw driver to prise the latch open whilst using the key, didn't require any real force, problem seems resolved now , although the ambient temperature had increased by a few degrees so I'm not sure if this was temperature related, as a few hours had gone by.
Any thoughts or ideas would be gratefully received
Cheers Stu
