Hi all,
I am new to the site but here is my problem if anyone could help me narrow down my problem.
2003 3.0d sport. Having a bit of trouble with the x5 i serviced it the weekend before last changed air filter oil filter engine oil and gear oil went brining it for a spin after the service and the vibrations were very bad at low revs and it sounds way louder than normal i have checked for boost leaks cleaned the egr valve found a small leak on the pipe that comes off the egr valve fixed that and no change. I also unpluged each injector one at a time an each of them effected the way the engine was running as i unpluged them its driving me crazy now. Also on start up there is savage smoke from the exhaust when started from cold and clears nearly straight away.

Chris

Was the service at an indy or Main Dealer?

Are the vibrations when at a stand still / idle or is it when moving? Are the vibrations steady? Do they increase with RPM?

I serviced it my self on my lift. the vibration is at its worst at stand still when i rev it to 1500rpm after that it clears it self out a bit. when i stop at traffic lights i put it into park and the vibrations are still savage. there still is a vibration in it when driving aswell at low speeds

Are all the houses etc reconnected? Check you did not inadvertantly knock anything off in terms of air or vacuum lines.

Are the power levels as they were or down?

Yeah, sounds like it could be air starvation? Just check all the hoses are back where they should be... also that the Air Filter went in the correct way - i'm trying to remember when I had the 530d and the Air Filter was alongside the engine, I presume it is the same on the 3.0d X5?

Report back...

The air filter should only fit one way, the back circular protrusion is off-centre On the back end that goes towards the back of the car), turn it round and it won't sit properly to get the cover on.

I had vibration on start-up and idle, but changing the filter, breather and cleaning the EGR valve (even though it wasn't that dirty) has helped with A LOT less vibration. HTHs

Hi, did you get this sorted ?
You say there is lots of smoke on start up, did it do this before ?
If not could it be the oil separator ? Being a 2003 model it will have the old type which are prone to clog up, not sure if it would cause vibration but worth replacing with modified type anyway if this has not been done.
Check out other threads on this subject.
Phil.

Hi,
Oil separator located in a housing next to the air filter.
The older type foam filters are know to block up which causes excessive crankcase pressure.
Do a search, there's lots of posts on the subject & how to replace it.
Worth replacing it anyway if it is the original.
