There are plenty on flea bay to choose from and all pretty much in the same price range. Not sure what will make one piece of straight through metal pipe better that any other? As long as the one you choose has the correct blanking points included i don't think it will make any difference who actually makes / sells it.

My bypass unit came from Bulgaria - £19... fitted easily... a tad more power & better engine response..
& gave me a few more mpg - but not a saving to write home about lol

I also got a blanker plate & removed the pipe from the manifold completely.

When you remove the EGR Valve, before you undo the bolts - (which you will likely lose...)
put a small bit of rag (flannel sized) under the EGR unit to catch the bolts., then they cannot drop thru the engine bay & hide under the engine on the under-tray.

What one did you go with in the end? The type that has the blanking plugs built in or the type where you have to remove the flexi recirc hose?

I had a similar item last year, but I chopped off the clip release off the original EGR unit & epoxy bonded it to the front facing end of the bypass unit.... and a bit of machining to make a good fit...
so - still retaining the fast release feature of the sprung clip.
The jubilee clip will work just as well I'm sure.

No error codes, it's a simple vacuum operated valve no electro ice involved. Just remove it , clean it with carb cleaner. Refit it to the car and blank of the small vacuum pipe that operates it with a 4 MM screw with a bit of PTFE tape around it so it's not drawing in any air. All done. Not. Worth buying a bypass kit. It then can be reconnected in future if needed.

When the weather is nice I'm going to have a go at mine

The hex/allen sockets I have are too fat and foul the body. Somewhere I have some long handle allen key thingy me bobs. How did you find unbolting it and any particular weapon or allen key of choice as they're well hidden underneath?

I have a similar unit on my facelift 3.0d, and it does generate an error code.

It isn't a code that causes a fault light or anything on the cluster, but when you scan with BMW DIS it comes up with:

4501 DDE: Exhaust-gas recirculation

It then details that the air/exhaust-gas ratio is too high, ie: too much air.

It never causes a problem, but does keep generating the code when it is cleared.

Hi StorminMike...
re bolt access for EGR removal....
obviously intake cover & engine cover to be removed 1st...

the air pipe input into the EGR unclips & can be filded out of the way.
THEN get a flannel or small rag & neetly fold & place under tge EGR unit... As I will guarantee you will drop a bolt & lose it otherwise...
the rag will catch the bolts.

access with a 1/4 drive socket set with a hex / allen head...
you may also need a small 1/4 flexi/universal joint in there too.
A 1/4 drive socket set can be bought from Ebay for about £12 & is excellent for all the little awkward access jobs on an X5.

the while job will take you under an hour, including removing the metal feed pipe & blanking it off at the manifold...

Hoep this helps.

PM me if you need any more info.

Sweet

Although I'm struggling to find a face-lift kit, are they all the same for each year?
