Our 2002 3.0d has covered 165k, Is it worth getting it re mapped or am I asking for trouble? 

It depends - As you already have 165k on the clock, you are probably already waiting for things to need a little TLC to keep it running.

So either you wish to prolong the inevitable for as long as possible/until after you sell it in which case I would not remap it, or you accept that you will be replacing numerous parts anyway and remapping will accelerate wear on some of those parts; in which case I would remap it and enjoy it.

At 165k, your engine isn't going to die (remap or not) but most of the other parts of the car are going to need maintenance/replacement sooner or later remap or not. Remapping it (and actually using that extra power regularly as I found I did when I remapped mine) may put more strain on certain components that will decrease their life span.

In my last e70,  by 122k I had somehow managed to need a new gearbox, new front springs, new front and rear control arms, new rear air bags, new engine mounts. I don't which of those items might have lasted longer if it wasn't remapped but I drove that car hard (once warm) and the gearbox and suspension would have been under stress simply from my driving style remapped or not... It was just more fun remapped than standard and I don't regret my decision.

The gearbox will be the greatest 'risk' at that mileage, unless you decrease torque of course

Thought about it all myself and now at 130k and going well then I reckon another 30k for my money then I have done very well for my money without major repairs.

WOW 165k, and still going strong, only goes to show how a well looked after motor can still keep going well.
Years ago when I was a class one HGV driver, we used to drive wagons that had 600, 000 KM on them and they were as strong and drove as well as new. It shows that with a well made, well engineered and well serviced vehicle
High mileage is achievable.
Unfortunately I get jittery when mine reach 100k, I shouldn't be.
As for the remap, if you have it done and something fails, who would know if it would have failed anyway ?

I bought my 2006 E53 when it had 80k KMS on the clock and had it remapped shortly afterwards (278PS/535NM) It's now got 245k KMS on the clock and with the exception of a precautionary turbo change 3 years ago, all I have had to do to it is regular servicing, oil change every 5000 KMS etc.

Not only did the remap improve the power/torque, the fuel consumption also improved.
I would say go for it, but make sure the remap is done by a well known reputable company.

I wouldn't let the mileage put you off getting it re-mapped! These motors are built well and built to last!
Mine is a 51-plate 3.0d & has got 159k miles on it & the engine is sound! Its well serviced & gives me 28.8 mpg.
Infact it drives smoother & nicer than my works car which is a 13-plate ford! 

I find it funny that people still see 100k as this scary value that if your car is still running at this point, you are lucky and don't do anything to modify it...

Firstly, on a car that has done well over 100k and is over 10 years old, you'd be lucky if it still had the nameplate power... therefore a remap will restore this and/or exceed it slightly. A remap alone is not doing anything to add stress to the vehicle components - all it is doing is smoothing out the power curves and making sure the air/fuel is optimum. You are using the parts installed to create the power the map provides. It would be different if you were strapping on a bigger Turbo and not uprating other components, but this is purely a software mod.

Secondly, it is not uncommon for a car to do 100k in 2 years - especially those who commute or travel a lot for business... they know this when they are engineering and make the engines to well exceed this sort of mileage. At the end of the day, there is much more to a car than its engine, and much more that will probably fail at this mileage/age... but everyone gets worried about the engine because it is the heart of the car. I don't think you need to worry with this powerplant.

Yes & service the gearbox every 3yrs!

I've been going to the automatic gearbox centre in Hove & they've serviced it.
I am thinking about doing it myself next year as have heard its not meant to be that difficult!

Thanks how much do they normally charge you?

Think there prices may have gone up a little since two years ago but I did pay £140. Think facelift gearbox service is a bit more 

One of Jason's guys at BW Chiptune who gets lots of endorsements off this forum stated - 'you remap it and you know things get pushed a bit beyond their normal factory tolerances and expected to have a slightly shorter life.'

Make of that statement as you will but flip side so far my E53 facelift has been fine after 7 years of remap ownership.

Look after it with careful maintenance can only help.

My gearbox oil was changed at 25k (gasket leak) and now at 65k - no change in 6 years and no issue (shit, touch some wood QUICK)!
