Ive seen a 2010 x5 x30d se for sale; it states engine and transmision replaced at 180,000 with a engine with 51,000, work completed by BMW; if there is a full service history would you chance buying it?

Forgive me but I'm really out of touch in terms for pricing but if the price is well below equivalent cars then yes at least have a look but engine aside, the electrics suspension etc have done the 230k mileage so be sure to check everything and be ready to walk away. Get it wrong and you could end up with a massive headache(read £s spent).  If it is an ex police car then have a good look for where the radios, computers etc were fitted as these can leave unsightly holes right in the middle of the dash.

Needs the whole suspension, steering & transmission looking at - especially the AWD system.  It will have been serviced every 3,000 miles but......it will have been driven by dozens of people if it is an ex-Police vehicle.

They also don't usually replace the engine etc, but dispose of the vehicle 'as is' if it's that broken.

An engine with 51k on it already? So a second hand engine? I didn't think BMW would touch a used engine transplant?
