My E70 is three years old this month and therefore runs out of warranty.  What is the general opinion of taking the BMW extended warranty.  It is not cheap at nearly £1400 for a year.

Yes it's a bit of a dilemma. sacrifice £100+ a month just for the pleasure of running the motor of your choice. Or take a risk that all will be fine and any prospective repairs will always be under £1400.

As of March next year, I am in the same position. I Am still undecided, I've had trouble free motoring during my first year of ownership, mines 5 years old with 60K.

I ve spoken with many other owners who have not taken the extended warranty, and all have had relatively trouble free usage since their warranty expired. Yes I know there are cases on here of gearboxes failing and turbos going, but its never happened to any of my vehicles, only to idiots who have purchased unresearched second hand lemons and as such deserve everything they got but I still say, a vehicle sourced from a reputable dealer which has been well maintained carefully driven, will repay you throughout the years.

Alas these aren't cheap cars to own or run and yes your hand will be dipping deep occasionally, but hey that's the joy of owning any prestige motor.

Personally i have not taken out any extended warranty,  but i do know of someone who has a 2008 x5 sd
And has made good use out of his bmw warranty , i do tend to buy used cars with a good set of receipts/history so you know whats been recently replaced and then i usually sell on within the year (mostly trouble free).

It's a tough decision to make, we decided to take the BMW extended warrenty and 3 months later it needed a new gearbox at 63k so you could say that the warrenty has paid for itself in that claim in one go, you pay your money and take a chance, I would expect that the gearbox would be slightly more than £1400 the cost of the warrenty.

I have a 2009 x5 35d with extended warranty . In the last six months the rear airbag suspension has been replaced. A new sat nav cc unit has been fitted . They have replaced six glow plugs new glow plug control unit new dpf with new sensors been worth its weight in gold

I bought an approved X5 last year which came with one but when it ran out it was a no brainer  for me.! I paid for another 12 Months as my car is 6 years old and i suppose its going to be more vulnerable now.
The only thing for me which was hard to understand is how the price rockets when the car gets to 60,000 miles.! As i said in previous posts, you would of thought a premium car like BMW would have a little more faith in there product and make this at least 100,000 miles.! BUT for me even more reason to have it as i guess they must be getting more claims on this mileage.
I will renew again in may next year as i will be selling it come Oct/Nov for hopefully for a newer one and im sure it will help me when i come to sell it as it will still have a good 6 months left which i believe is transferable, so maybe it might pay for itself  O:-)

If you buy it monthly then the price is fixed.  The only increase I have had is due to HMRC increasing the tax on insurance policies! Not sure if the same happens if you put auto renew in operation?

In my opinion, it depends how confident you are in the car. Has the car been in for any major work during your ownership? Does it ‘feel’ solid (I know that’s a bit of a noddy question but you can usually get a feel for whether a car is reliable or not). Do you take good care of it and always maintain it? etc.

My previous car was 335d bought under the AUC scheme back in early 2013. The car was an absolute lemon and would breakdown or get faults every other week. Had I kept the car (I ended up threatening Stratstone with court action forcing them to buy the car back off me) I would’ve jumped at the chance to extend the warranty, regardless of cost. However with my X5, I feel the car is reasonably solid and reliable, whilst I can’t predict faults, I’m not too concerned about warranty.
