MOT Fail - BMW X5 56 Plate - 3.0d Sport Exlusive Edition

Post by zabe_1 » Mon Nov 02, 2015 6:48 pm

Hello all,

I've just picked up this car and took it for an MOT to assess the damage as the MOT runs out on the 17th of this month.

The issues it failed on are:-

001 Hazard warning switch faulty
002 - Horn not working
003 - Front constant velocity joint gaitor deteriorated to the extent it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc. nearside front outer (on small clip)
004 Seat belt locking mechanism does secure or relese offside rear.

What do you think these would cost to put right and where do you reckon I should take it too. I know Kwik Fit and stuff won't touch electrics so just wanting a rough idea on how much these could cost to replace so I don't get bumped hehe. I am not a DIY person at all, so not very good at doing the above myself, so would need to take it somewhere.

Thanks so much

I use the dealers , they charge £35 for an mot will give you a list of fails & how much it will cost to fix .
Some times the cheaper garages can make stuff up !

If you do it yourself you could be looking at less than £100 in parts.

However it depends on the exact faults.

Electrics could just be a fuse or loose connection.

CV boots are basically a piece of cake to do.
Seat belt could just be a replacement part needed.
The rears are extremely simple to change.
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

Have you tried pulling it out and looking at the bottom where the electrical connections are on the switch?

It's a multi part piece and my guess is that the bottom (wher the wires go in) is shoved out such that the button never reaches the contacts. That's what happened to mine. Held it back together to see if that was the fault....it was....I glued it back together again....job done

Watch this .....ignore the removal issue as its not X5 but th fault is generic
